Zita Maria de Seabra Roseiro (born May 25, 1949, in Coimbra, Santa Cruz) is a Portuguese politician and publisher.
Zita Seabra joined the Portuguese Communist Party in 1966, before she was eighteen years old and was controller of the UEC (in Portuguese: União dos Estudantes Comunistas - Communist Student Union) before and after the Carnation Revolution. As a member of the Communist Party, she was elected to and served in the Portuguese parliament, representing Lisbon and Aveiro between 1980 and 1987. She was elected to the Political Commission of the party at its 10th Congress in 1983. In 1982 she was responsible for introducing in parliament for the first time a bill to legalize abortion, which failed. [1] She abandoned the Communist Party shortly before the fall of the Soviet Union, and became one of the most widely known party dissidents. Due to her criticisms of the party, she was expelled from its Political Committee in 1988, and then purged from the party's Central Committee. In 1988 she published the book The Name of Things: Reflections During Times of Change which went through seven printings by the following year. In 1989 she traveled to Russia to cover its first free elections for the Expresso newspaper. During the visit, she was struck by the contrast between what she had read about the country in its propaganda as a workers' paradise and what she observed. She was expelled from the party in 1990. [2] After publicly renouncing communism, she joined the center-right Social Democratic Party (PSD) and rejoined the Assembly of the Republic representing her home district of Coimbra. She was Vice-President of the Parliamentary Group of the Social Democratic Party. She also became opposed to legalized abortion. She would convert to Roman Catholicism. [1] After the establishment of the Portuguese party Liberal Initiative in 2017, she joined this party. [3]
With an interest in the arts, she directed the National Audio-Visual Bureau, and, in 1993, she became president of the Portuguese Film Institute. From 1994 to 1995, she was the President of the Portuguese Institute of Cinematographic and Audiovisual Arts. In the private sector, she has been very active in publishing. She was editor of the Quetzal publishing house, administrator and editorial director of Bertrand Publishers, and is currently the President of the Executive Board and Director of the Alêtheia publishing house in Lisbon, which she founded.
The Socialist Party is a social-democratic political party in Portugal. It was founded on 19 April 1973 in the German city of Bad Münstereifel by militants who were at the time with the Portuguese Socialist Action. The PS is a member of the Socialist International, Progressive Alliance and Party of European Socialists, and has nine members in the European Parliament within the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats group during the 9th European Parliament. It has been the governing party of Portugal since November 2015, subsequently winning the 2019 and 2022 legislative elections.

Commonly known by its colloquial initials PSD, on ballot papers its initials appear as its official form PPD/PSD, with the first three letters coming from the party's original name, the Democratic People's Party. The CDS – People's Party is a conservative and Christian democratic political party in Portugal. It is characterized as being between the centre-right and right-wing of the political spectrum. Álvaro Barreirinhas Cunhal was a Portuguese communist revolutionary and politician. He was one of the major opponents of the dictatorial regime of the Estado Novo. He served as secretary-general of the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) from 1961 to 1992. He was one of the most pro-Soviet of all Western Europe communist leaders, often supporting the Soviet Union's foreign policies, including the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. During the 1970s, Cunhal supported Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev’s political agenda, and strongly opposed Mikhail Gorbachev’s perestroika policies in the 1980s.
Carlos Alfredo de Brito, GCIH is a Portuguese politician. He was born in Portuguese Mozambique but went with his family to Alcoutim, in Algarve, Portugal when he was 3 years old. He joined the illegal Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) during the corporatist, authoritarian New State regime (1932-1974), by whom he was imprisoned.

The 2009 Portuguese legislative election was held on 27 September, to renew all 230 members of the Assembly of the Republic. The Socialist Party, led by incumbent Prime Minister José Sócrates, won the largest number of seats, but didn't repeat the overall majority they gained in 2005.
Abortion laws in Portugal were liberalized on April 10, 2007, allowing an elective abortion to be provided if a woman's pregnancy has not exceeded its tenth week. There is a three-day waiting period for abortions. President Aníbal Cavaco Silva ratified the law allowing abortion, recommending nevertheless that measures should be taken to ensure abortion is the last resort. Despite the liberalization of the laws, as of a 2011 survey, many doctors were refusing to perform abortions – which they are allowed to do under a conscientious objection clause. Abortions at later stages are allowed for specific reasons, such as risk to woman's health reasons, rape and other sexual crimes, or fetal malformation; with restrictions increasing gradually at 12, 16 and 24 weeks.
Pedro Manuel Mamede Passos Coelho is a Portuguese politician and university guest lecturer who was the 118th prime minister of Portugal, in office from 2011 to 2015. He was the leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) between 2010 and 2018.
The Portuguese local elections of 2009 took place on 11 October. The elections consisted of three separate elections in the 308 Portuguese municipalities, the election for the Municipal Chambers, whose winner is elected president, another election for the Municipal Assembly and a last one for the lower-level Parish Assembly, whose winner is elected parish president. This last was held separately in the more than 4,000 parishes around the country. The elections took place just two weeks after the 2009 legislative election.
