Successful stars of the year

1. Rajesh Khanna- Khanna featured in four of the top ten grossers of the year- the multistarrers Maqsad and Dharm Aur Qanoon and solo films Asha Jyoti and Awaaz .

2. Jeetendra- He starred in the top grossing Tohfa and also featured in Maqsad with Khanna.

3. Dharmendra- He featured in the multistarrer Raaj Tilak and in Dharam Aur Kanoon with Khanna.

4. Amitabh Bachchan- Bachchan had only two releases, out of which Sharaabi was a big hit and Inquilaab was an average grosser.

5. Jaya Prada- A breakthrough year for her. The most successful actress of the year, Jaya featured as the female lead in four of the top five grossers of the year- Tohfa, Sharaabi, Maqsad and Dharm Aur Qanoon. She also featured as the female lead in Awaaz opposite Khanna.

6. Sridevi- She too featured in Tohfa and Maqsad with Jaya and opposite Bachchan in Inquilaab.

7. Reena Roy- Roy featured in the multistarrer Raaj Tilak and in Asha Jyoti with Khanna.

Jayaprada is the recipient of three Filmfare Awards South and has starred in many Telugu and Hindi films along with several Kannada, Tamil, Malayalam, Bengali and Marathi films. She left the film industry at the peak of her career, as she joined the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in 1994 and entered politics. She was a Member of Parliament (MP) from Rampur, Uttar Pradesh from 2004 to 2014.

In 1976, Roy entered the top league after starring in two of the biggest box-office hits, the action thriller Kalicharan and the horror film Nagin. She repeated the feat in 1978 with Vishwanath and Aasha.

The film was a commercial hit at the Indian box-office and was critically acclaimed. Dharm Aur Qanoon was the remake of 1982 Malayalam language film Aarambham.

Maqsad (transl. Motive) is a 1984 Indian Hindi-language action film, produced by D. Rama Naidu under the Suresh Productions banner and directed by K. Bapaiah. The film stars Jeetendra, Rajesh Khanna, Jaya Prada, Sridevi and Waheeda Rehman in lead roles with music composed by Bappi Lahiri. Shatrughan Sinha makes a guest appearance. Prem Chopra, Ranjeet, Shakti Kapoor, Kader Khan, Amjad Khan, Shreeram Lagoo are featured in supporting roles.

The 32nd Filmfare Awards were held in 1985.

Asha Jyoti is a 1984 Hindi film starring Rajesh Khanna, Rekha, Reena Roy in lead roles. The film was directed by Dasari Narayana Rao, who had also directed Aaj Ka M.L.A. Ram Avtar with Khanna in the lead role and music was given by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. The film is remake of Telugu Movie Srivari Muchatlu (1981). The film grossed 5.75 crores at the box office in 1984 and was a commercial success. It received three stars in the Bollywood guide Collections.
