Andre Agassi defeated Todd Martin in the final, 6–4, 6–7(5–7), 6–7(2–7), 6–3, 6–2 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 1999 US Open. With the win, he returned to the world No. 1 singles ranking, and helped end Pete Sampras' streak of six year-end No. 1 rankings.
Gustavo Kuerten defeated Magnus Norman in the final, 6–2, 6–3, 2–6, 7–6(8–6) to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2000 French Open. It was his second French Open title. The final was a rematch of the Rome final a month prior, in which Norman had prevailed.

Gustavo Kuerten defeated Sergi Bruguera in the final, 6–3, 6–4, 6–2 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 1997 French Open. He became the first unseeded player since Mats Wilander in 1982 and the second-lowest ranked player ever to win a major, and the first Brazilian male singles player to win a major. Following the win, Kuerten improved in the rankings from world No. 66 to No. 15.
