The 1970 FIFA World Cup was the 9th edition of the FIFA World Cup, the quadrennial international football championship for men's senior national teams. Held from 31 May to 21 June in Mexico, it was the first World Cup tournament held outside Europe and South America, and also the first held in North America. Teams representing 75 nations from all six populated continents entered the competition, and its qualification rounds began in May 1968. Fourteen teams qualified from this process to join host nation Mexico and defending champions England in the 16-team final tournament. El Salvador, Israel and Morocco made their debut appearances at the final stage.
The 1974 FIFA World Cup was the 10th FIFA World Cup, a quadrennial football tournament for men's senior national teams, and was played in West Germany between 13 June and 7 July. The tournament marked the first time that the current trophy, the FIFA World Cup Trophy, created by the Italian sculptor Silvio Gazzaniga, was awarded. The previous trophy, the Jules Rimet Trophy, had been won for the third time by Brazil in 1970 and awarded permanently to the Brazilians.
The 1982 FIFA World Cup was the 12th FIFA World Cup, a quadrennial football tournament for men's senior national teams, and was played in Spain from 13 June to 11 July 1982. The tournament was won by Italy, who defeated West Germany 3–1 in the final held in the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in the capital, Madrid. It was Italy's third World Cup title, but their first since 1938. The defending champions, Argentina, were eliminated in the second round. Algeria, Cameroon, Honduras, Kuwait and New Zealand made their first appearances in the finals.
The 1986 FIFA World Cup was the 13th FIFA World Cup, a quadrennial football tournament for men's senior national teams. It was played in Mexico from 31 May to 29 June 1986. The tournament was the second to feature a 24-team format. Colombia had been originally chosen to host the competition by FIFA but, largely due to economic reasons, was not able to do so, and resigned in November 1982. Mexico was selected as the new host in May 1983, and became the first country to host the World Cup more than once, after previously hosting the 1970 edition.
The 1982 European Cup Winners' Cup Final was a football match contested between Barcelona of Spain and Standard Liège of Belgium. It was the final match of the 1981–82 European Cup Winners' Cup and the 22nd European Cup Winners' Cup final. The final was held on 12 May 1982 at Camp Nou in Barcelona, Spain, the home ground of FC Barcelona. Barcelona won the match 2–1 thanks to goals by Allan Simonsen and Quini. The 2nd goal for Barcelona was after a free kick. Barcelona player Quini took the free kick before the referee had blown his whistle. The referee approved this goal. This led to much frustration to the players of Standard. Standard Liège centre back Walter Meeuws was sent off in the final minute after receiving his second yellow card for a foul on Lobo Carrasco due to this incident.
The knockout stage of the 2007–08 UEFA Champions League began on 19 February 2008, and concluded on 21 May 2008 with the final at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, Russia. The knockout stage involved the 16 teams who finished in the top two in each of their groups in the group stage.

Their first participation in a World Cup was in the United States in 1994 where they achieved 18th place.
The knockout stage of the 1994–95 UEFA Champions League began on 1 March 1995 and ended with the final at the Ernst-Happel-Stadion in Vienna on 24 May 1995. The top two teams from each of the four groups in the group stage competed in the knockout stage. For the quarter-finals, each group winner was randomly drawn against the runner-up from another group, with the group winner hosting the second leg. The four quarter-final winners were then drawn together for the semi-finals, the winners of which contested the final.
Algeria has qualified to the FIFA World Cup on four occasions, in 1982, 1986, 2010 and 2014. They have once qualified for the knockout rounds, reaching the round of 16 in 2014 before losing to Germany. Algeria nearly qualified to the second round of the 1982 World Cup after beating both West Germany and Chile; however, a controversial match between West Germany and Austria wound up eliminating the Algerians. In 2014, Algeria qualified for the round of 16 for the first time.
Russia have participated in twelve UEFA European Championships, the second-most among all participants of the Euro after Germany, equalled to Spain, five of which were as the Soviet Union and one of which was representing the CIS. As the Soviet Union, their best performance was becoming champions in the inaugural 1960 edition in France, while their best performance as Russia came in the 2008 tournament held in Austria and Switzerland, when they reached the semi-finals.

Like Scotland in '74 and Brazil in '78, Three Lions of '82 stayed unbeaten but were eliminated before the semifinals.
