The 1989 FIFA Futsal World Championship was the first FIFA Futsal World Championship, the quadrennial international futsal championship contested by the men's national teams of the member associations of FIFA. It was held between 5 and 15 January 1989 in the Netherlands. It was the first non-Olympic FIFA tournament held in the country.

The 1986–87 season was the 32nd season of the European Cup, Europe's premier club football competition. The tournament was won by Porto, who came from behind in the final against Bayern Munich to give a Portuguese club its first title since 1962.

The 1989–90 UEFA Cup was won by Juventus on aggregate over Fiorentina. This was the first final between two Italian sides in the UEFA competitions history and the third between two clubs of the same country.

The 1985–86 UEFA Cup was the 15th season of the UEFA Cup, an annual club football tournament organised by UEFA. It was won by Real Madrid, who beat 1. FC Köln 5–3 on aggregate in the final. It was the first season in which English clubs were serving an indefinite ban from European football competitions, which meant two-time UEFA Cup winners Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, as well as Southampton and Norwich City were unable to compete.

The 1983–84 UEFA Cup was the 13th season of the UEFA Cup, the third-tier club football competition organised by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). It was won by English club Tottenham Hotspur, who beat Belgian side Anderlecht on penalties, after the final finished 2–2 on aggregate.

The 1982–83 UEFA Cup was the 12th edition of the UEFA Cup. It was won by Belgian club Anderlecht on 2–1 aggregate over Portuguese club Benfica.

The 1987 FIFA World Youth Championship took place in Chile from 10 to 25 October 1987. The 1987 championship was the 6th edition of the FIFA World Youth Championship and won for the first time by Yugoslavia. Remarkably, in the course of the tournament the Yugoslavs defeated each of the three other semi-finalists, and eliminated the defending champions Brazil. The tournament took place in four venues: Antofagasta, Valparaíso, Concepción and Santiago.

The 1992 FIFA Futsal World Championship was the second FIFA Futsal World Championship, the quadrennial international futsal championship contested by the men's national teams of the member associations of FIFA. It was held between 15 and 28 November 1992 in Hong Kong. It was the first FIFA tournament held in the country.

High-speed rail service in the Netherlands started on 13 December 2009 with the dedicated HSL-Zuid line that connects the Randstad via Brussels to the European high-speed rail network. In later years improved traditional rail sections were added to the high-speed network. Proposals for more dedicated high-speed lines were deemed too costly; plans for the HSL-Oost to Germany were mothballed and instead of the Zuiderzeelijn the less ambitious Hanzelijn was built to enable future high-speed service between the northern provinces and the Randstad.

The 2010 UEFA Futsal Championship was the seventh official edition of the UEFA-governed European Championship for national futsal teams. It was hosted by Hungary, between January 19 and January 30, 2010, in two venues located in Budapest and Debrecen. For the first time, twelve teams competed in the final round, after a qualifying phase where eleven teams managed to join the Hungarian hosts.

Play in Group F of the 1990 FIFA World Cup completed on 21 June 1990. England won the group and advanced to the second round, along with the Republic of Ireland and the Netherlands. Egypt failed to advance. This group has the record of the most draws (five) of any "group round" in World Cup history.

The Netherlands national football team has appeared in ten UEFA European Championship tournaments, with an upcoming eleventh appearance in 2024. They first participated in 1976, and won the title in 1988. With Belgium, the Netherlands co-hosted the 2000 tournament. The team did not enter the first tournament in 1960, and did not qualify in 1964, 1968, 1972, 1984 and 2016.

The Denmark national football team have participated in nine UEFA European Championships, and won the tournament once. Their first tournament was the 1964 edition, in which they secured fourth place. In the final of UEFA Euro 1992 in Sweden, Denmark's 2–0 victory over Germany resulted in their first major tournament title.

Norway qualified for one UEFA European Championship so far, the Euro 2000 tournament. During the qualifiers, they enforced direct qualification by ending first in their group with Slovenia, Greece, Latvia, Albania and Georgia.

Romania have appeared at five UEFA European Championships between 1984 and 2016, with an upcoming sixth appearance in 2024. Their best performance so far was reaching the quarter-finals of Euro 2000, when they were eliminated by eventual tournament runners-up Italy.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification UEFA Group G was one of the ten UEFA groups in the World Cup qualification tournament to decide which teams would qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup finals tournament in Qatar. Group G consisted of six teams: Gibraltar, Latvia, Montenegro, the Netherlands, Norway and Turkey. The teams played against each other home-and-away in a round-robin format.

The 2022–23 Eredivisie was the 67th season of the Eredivisie, the premier football competition in the Netherlands. It began on 5 August 2022 and concluded on 28 May 2023. As the 2022 FIFA World Cup started on 20 November, the last round before stoppage was held on 12–13 November. The league resumed games on 6 January.
