• 1st - Republic day celebrations held across the country.

August

• - President Jerry Rawlings, becomes chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). ^[2]
• Emmanuel Aboki Essien, representing the Grand Lodge of Ghana becomes the first black and African Imperial Grand President of the Orange Order. ^[3]
