Ong Teng Cheong was a Singaporean politician, architect, and union leader who served as the fifth president of Singapore from 1993 to 1999. He was the first directly elected president in Singapore's history. Born in the Straits Settlements, Ong was educated at the University of Adelaide and studied architecture. He later received a Colombo Plan scholarship and graduated from the University of Liverpool with a master's degree in urban planning.
Expo MRT station is a Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) interchange station on the East West line (EWL) and Downtown line (DTL) in the Tampines planning area, Singapore. The station lies between Changi City Point and the Singapore Expo, located along Changi South Avenue 1 at the junction of Expo Drive.
The history of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system of Singapore commenced with its planning in the 1960s, which finally led to its opening in 1987 with the launch of a 6 km section of the North–South Line (NSL) from Yio Chu Kang to Toa Payoh. Since its inception, the rapid transit system has played a crucial role in the public transportation network and the wider development of the country as a whole, providing a fast and efficient means of transportation for millions of Singaporeans daily.

The Government has announced earlier that state flags on all public buildings will be flown at half-mast on the day of Mr Ong Teng Cheong's funeral as a mark of respect. This day, 12 February 2002, coincides with the first day of the Chinese New Year. Feedback shows that many people are uncomfortable to have the nation's flag at half-mast on an auspicious day like the first day of the Chinese New Year. The Government has now decided to fly all state flags at half-mast a day earlier, on Monday 11 February 2002 instead of on 12 February 2002.
On 12 February 2002, 371 staff from the Singapore Press Holdings moved from Times House to their new and spacious office at the News Centre at Toa Payoh North.
As a mark of respect to ex-President Ong, the State flag on all Government buildings will be lowered to half-mast on the day of his funeral i.e. Tuesday, 12 February 2002.
