The 2005 San Marino GP2 round was a GP2 Series motor race held on 23 and 24 April 2005 at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola, Italy. It was the first race of the 2005 GP2 Series season. The race was used to support the 2005 San Marino Grand Prix.

Contents

The first race was won by Heikki Kovalainen for Arden International, with José María López second for DAMS and Scott Speed finishing third for iSport International. Polesitter Nicolas Lapierre did not start.

The second race was won by Adam Carroll for Super Nova International, with Alexandre Prémat for ART Grand Prix and Heikki Kovalainen also on the podium.

Heikki Johannes Kovalainen is a Finnish racing driver competing in the Japan Rally Championship for Rally Team AICELLO. He raced in Formula One between 2007 and 2013 for the Renault, McLaren, Team Lotus, Caterham and Lotus F1 teams, scoring a single victory at the 2008 Hungarian Grand Prix. After leaving Formula One, he raced in the Japanese Super GT series between 2015 and 2021, where he won the championship in 2016.

The 2005 GP2 Series season was the thirty-ninth season of the second-tier of Formula One feeder championship and also first season under the GP2 Series moniker. The season started in Imola, Italy on 23 April, and ended in Manama, Bahrain on 30 September. The season was won by the German Nico Rosberg, with the Finn Heikki Kovalainen finishing second.

He is a two-time winner of the 12 Hours of Sebring, with overall victories in 2011 and 2018, and scored four LMP2 class victories in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2015, 2016, 2018, and 2019. He now races with Alpine in the LMH class in the FIA World Endurance Championship driving the number 36 Alpine A480.

The 62-lap race was the fourth round of the 2006 Formula One season, and the 26th running of the San Marino Grand Prix. It was won by Ferrari driver Michael Schumacher, who had started from pole position. It was both his and Ferrari's first win of the season. Championship leader Fernando Alonso finished second for the Renault team, whilst Juan Pablo Montoya completed the podium with third position for McLaren.
