Johnny Cecotto Jr. made his return to GP2 for this round with the Rapax team, whilst Jimmy Eriksson pulled out of the round due to financial setbacks.

Malaysian Grand Prix Formula 1 Grand Prix

The Malaysian Grand Prix was an annual auto race held in Malaysia. It was part of the Formula One World Championship from 1999 to 2017 and it was held during these years at the Sepang International Circuit. The Malaysian Grand Prix was held annually from 1962 to 1964 in Singapore, whilst it was a member of the Malaysian federation. Subsequent Grands Prix were held in Peninsular Malaysia.

In wet conditions the race was dominated by Casey Stoner in a return to form following a mystery illness which ended his hopes of regaining the world championship title. Valentino Rossi finished third, which clinched the 2009 MotoGP championship for him.

2011 Malaysian motorcycle Grand Prix

The 2011 Malaysian motorcycle Grand Prix was the seventeenth round of the 2011 Grand Prix motorcycle racing season. It took place on the weekend of 21–23 October 2011 at the Sepang International Circuit, but the MotoGP race was red flagged and subsequently cancelled after two laps due to a serious accident involving Marco Simoncelli. Simoncelli fell while running fourth, his bike and body veering across the path of Colin Edwards and Valentino Rossi. Simoncelli was fatally struck in the head and chest by the two bikes. He was taken straight to the circuit's medical centre, but died of his injuries shortly thereafter.

Álex Márquez won the Moto2 title after finishing in 2nd place behind his closest title rival Brad Binder. Despite taking his fourth win of the season and the second consecutive win after winning the previous round at Phillip Island seven days ago, Márquez' 2nd place-finish was enough to mathematically eliminate Binder's hopes of winning his second title overall in his career after previously winning the 2016 Moto3 World Championship due to an uncatchable margin of Márquez by 28 points over Binder with one race to go.
