The 2009 Monaco GP2 Series round was a GP2 Series motor race held on 22 May and 24 May 2009 at the Circuit de Monaco on the streets of the country. It was the second race of the 2009 GP2 Season. The race was used as a support race for the 2009 Monaco Grand Prix

Report

The first race once again resulted in a one-two finish for Barwa Addax Team drivers Romain Grosjean and Vitaly Petrov, with Lucas di Grassi promoted to third for Fat Burner Racing Engineering, after Nico Hülkenberg was demoted after cutting a corner.

The red flagged second race was won by Pastor Maldonado for ART Grand Prix, with Jérôme d'Ambrosio and Hülkenberg also on the podium. Romain Grosjean had a big accident in the final stages, where he was unhurt, but it did bring out the red flag which ended the race 2 laps shy of the end.

Nicolas Hülkenberg is a German professional racing driver who is currently competing in the Formula One World Championship for Haas F1 Team. This comes after serving as a reserve driver for Aston Martin F1 Team for the year of 2022. In 2015, he also contested two rounds of the 2015 FIA World Endurance Championship season for Porsche, winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans on his first attempt. As of July 2022 he also holds the record for most career points without a single race win, the record was attributed after the previous holder, Carlos Sainz Jr. won the 2022 British Grand Prix.

Pastor Rafael Maldonado Motta is a Venezuelan professional racing driver, who competed in Formula One for the Williams (2011–2013) and Lotus (2014–2015) teams and as a Pirelli test driver until 2017. Before entering Formula One, he won the 2010 GP2 Series championship. He became the first Venezuelan to win a Formula One Grand Prix when he won the 2012 Spanish Grand Prix for Williams, from his first and only pole position. It was also his only podium finish and his only win in Formula One.

The 2009 GP2 Series season was the forty-third season of the second-tier of Formula One feeder championship and also fifth season under the GP2 Series moniker. The season consisted of twenty races at ten rounds, beginning on 9 May at the Circuit de Catalunya and finishing on 20 September at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve. The Algarve circuit hosted its first GP2 weekend, and was the only new circuit on the calendar. The Nürburgring also returned as part of its rotation with Hockenheim as the home of the German Grand Prix.

Mark Webber's victory created a new record for Formula One in that there had never been six different winners of the opening six Grands Prix of the season before.
