General elections were held in Palau on 6 November 2012. Former president Tommy Remengesau defeated his successor, incumbent Johnson Toribiong, who had been elected in 2008. [1] Antonio Bells was elected vice-president, defeating Kerai Mariur, who had finished first in the primary elections on 26 September.

Electoral system

The president and vice president elections had primary elections on 26 September, [2] from which the top two candidates qualified for the presidential general election on 6 November. [2]

15,305 voters registered to vote, an increase of 1,516 voters from the 2008 elections. [3]

Three candidates contested the presidential primary: Incumbent President Johnson Toribiong, former President Tommy Remengesau Jr., and former Vice President Sandra Pierantozzi, who served as vice president from 2001 to 2005. [2] Remengesau and Toribiong, who placed first and second respectively in the primary, advanced to the general election. [4]

Thomas Esang "Tommy" Remengesau Jr. is a Palauan politician. In 2013, he was elected the ninth president of Palau and was re-elected to that office in 2016. The first round of the presidential election took place on 22 September, whilst the run-off election and the election for the House of Delegates and Senate took place on 4 November. All candidates ran as independents. Despite finishing second in the first round of voting, Kuniwo Nakamura was elected President, whilst Thomas Remengesau Jr. won the election for Vice-President. Voter turnout was 74.3% in the presidential elections on 22 September and 83.9% on 4 November, and 83.2% for the legislative elections.

The first round of the presidential election took place on 24 September, whilst the run-off election and the election for the House of Delegates and Senate took place on 5 November. All candidates ran as independents, with 36 candidates contesting the 14 Senate seats and 35 for the 16 House of Delegates seats. Incumbent Kuniwo Nakamura was re-elected President, whilst Thomas Remengesau Jr. was re-elected vice president. Jackson R. Ngiraingas is a Palauan politician and businessman who served as Governor of Peleliu from 1995 to 2001 and 2004 to 2009. He resigned during his fourth term to become Minister of Public Infrastructure from 2009 to 2013.
