General elections were held in Palau on 4 November 1980 to elect a President, Vice-President, Senate and House of Delegates. All candidates ran as independents. [1] Haruo Remeliik won the election for President with 31.2% of the vote, whilst Alfonso Oiterong was elected Vice-President. Voter turnout was 80%.

Aftermath

Following the elections, Haruo Remeliik and Alfonso Oiterong were sworn in as President and Vice President on 1 January 1981. Kaleb Udui was elected President of the Senate, with Carlos Salii elected Speaker of the House of Delegates. [2]

The 1980 United States House of Representatives elections was an election for the United States House of Representatives on November 4, 1980, to elect members to serve in the 97th United States Congress. They coincided with the election of Ronald Reagan as president, defeating Democratic incumbent Jimmy Carter. Reagan's victory also allowed many Republican House candidates to secure elections. The Republicans gained a net of 35 seats from the Democratic Party. The Democrats nonetheless retained a significant majority, unlike the Senate elections, where Republicans gained control of the chamber. However, many Democratic congressmen from the south frequently took conservative stances on issues, allowing Republicans to have a working ideological majority for some of President Reagan's proposals during his first two years in office.

Haruo Ignacio Remeliik was the first President of Palau from 2 March 1981 until his assassination on 30 June 1985. He is buried at Kloulklubed in his home state of Peleliu. Remeliik was of mixed Japanese and Palauan descent.

Alfonso Rebochong Oiterong was a politician from Palau who served as the country's Vice President from 1981 to 1985. Despite internal problems in Palau during the Remeliik administration, Oiterong was perceived as an honest, capable and dedicated civil servant. In addition of the vice presidential post, he was the minister of state aka minister of foreign affairs.

General elections were held in Palau in 1992 to elect a President, Vice-President, Senate and House of Delegates. The first round of the presidential election took place on 22 September, whilst the run-off election and the election for the House of Delegates and Senate took place on 4 November. All candidates ran as independents. Despite finishing second in the first round of voting, Kuniwo Nakamura was elected President, whilst Thomas Remengesau Jr. won the election for Vice-President. Voter turnout was 74.3% in the presidential elections on 22 September and 83.9% on 4 November, and 83.2% for the legislative elections.

General elections were held in Palau in 1996 to elect a President, Vice-President, Senate and House of Delegates. The first round of the presidential election took place on 24 September, whilst the run-off election and the election for the House of Delegates and Senate took place on 5 November. All candidates ran as independents, with 36 candidates contesting the 14 Senate seats and 35 for the 16 House of Delegates seats Incumbent Kuniwo Nakamura was re-elected President, whilst Thomas Remengesau Jr. was re-elected Vice-President. Voter turnout was 77% in the presidential elections on 24 September and 81% on 5 November.

The 162nd Virginia General Assembly, consisting of members who were elected in both the House election in 2021 and the Senate election in 2019, convened on January 12, 2022. The legislature is the first since the 156th Assembly ended in 2012 to be of divided party control, with Republicans again controlling the House of Delegates and Democrats holding the Senate.
