Russian Federation participated at the I European Games, which took place in Baku, Azerbaijan from 12 to 28 June 2015. Russia sent athletes for every sport except athletics, as the level of Russian athletes was too high, according to Russia's Minister of Sports Vitaly Mutko. Russia still had the largest team at the Games, with the athletics programme consisting of only one event. Russia finished in the first place on the medal rankings, winning 79 gold medals.

The 34th European Athletics Indoor Championships were held between 3 and 5 March 2017 at the Kombank Arena in Belgrade, Serbia. This was the second time this event was held in the city after the 1969 edition then known as the European Indoor Games, and the first time in more than 30 years that the competition was held in Eastern Europe. The three-day competition featured 13 men's and 13 women's athletics events and took place over two morning and three afternoon sessions.
The 2020 French Open was a Grand Slam level tennis tournament played on outdoor clay courts. It was held at the Stade Roland Garros in Paris, France. Originally scheduled for 24 May to 7 June, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was first moved to 20 September to 4 October, then later moved back a week further to 27 September to 11 October.
