At the 2000 Summer Olympics, three different gymnastics disciplines were contested: artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, and trampoline. The artistic gymnastics and trampoline events were held at the Sydney SuperDome on 16–25 September and 22–23 September, respectively. The rhythmic gymnastics events were held at Pavilion 3 of the Sydney Olympic Park on 28 September – 1 October.
Amy Yuen Yee Chow is an American former artistic gymnast who competed at the 1996 and 2000 Summer Olympics. She is best known for being a member of the Magnificent Seven, which won the United States' first team gold medal in Olympic gymnastics. She is also the first Asian-American woman to win an Olympic medal in gymnastics.
Li Xiaopeng is a male Chinese gymnast, who specializes in parallel bars and vault. He currently holds 16 world titles, more than any other gymnast in China. On 29 August 2009, he was the torch bearer for the torch relay of the East Asian Games in Hong Kong. He retired from the sport in late 2009.
Liu Xuan is a former Chinese artistic gymnast. She competed in the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games and won two Olympic medals, including gold on the balance beam in 2000. She was born in Changsha, Hunan.

Kristen Ann Maloney is a retired gymnast from Pen Argyl, Pennsylvania, in the United States. She won bronze in the team event at the 2000 Olympic Games. Maloney was also the U.S. senior all-around national champion in 1998 and 1999 and the 1998 Goodwill Games gold medalist on the balance beam.
Ma Yanhong is a retired Chinese Olympic athlete. She was the first Chinese gymnast, male or female, to win a gold medal at the World Gymnastics Championships and the Olympic Games.
Denisse López Sing is a retired Mexican gymnast. She was the first gymnast from Mexico ever to qualify for an event final at the World Gymnastics Championships and the Olympic Games.
Viktoria Karpenko is a World Championships silver medalist and 2000 Olympian in artistic gymnastics. She began gymnastics at the age of four and went on to become the Ukrainian National Champion in 1996.

The qualification and final rounds took place on September 17 and 19 at the Sydney SuperDome. The number of gymnasts that made up each national team had changed again from 7 in the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta and back to 6, the number from the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. The format was similar to that of 1996, but specific to Sydney, 5 out of 6 gymnasts would compete on each apparatus where only the top 4 scores would count towards the final combined score at the end.

Dong Fangxiao is a Chinese retired international gymnast who competed at the 2000 Summer Olympics. She won a bronze medal with the Chinese team at the Olympics, as well as the 1999 World Championships in Tianjin China, but both the medals were stripped from her and her teammates when it was discovered she had competed underage.

Ukraine first competed at the 1993 World Championships, after the fall of the Soviet Union. Despite being very successful in the team events as the Soviet Union, Ukrainian athletes have primarily had individual success at the World Championships. The Chinese women originally won the bronze medal in the team event at the 1999 World Championships; however their medal was stripped in 2010 after it was discovered that Dong Fangxiao's age was falsified at the time of the competition. The Ukrainian women's team, who originally finished fourth, was then awarded the bronze medal.
