The 2016 Carling Black Label Cup was the sixth edition of the Carling Black Label Cup to be held.

The Carling Black Label Cup is a one-day pre-season soccer match between Soweto giants Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs in South Africa. It acts as a rehearsal for the forthcoming new season in South African football yearly

A South African beer brand Black Label started the “Be The Coach” where the fans had the opportunity to elect the starting 11 of their desired players from the two Soweto derby arch rivals, Orlando Pirates, and Kaizer Chiefs, which are two of the most successful and largest soccer clubs in South Africa.

The Soweto derby is a soccer rivalry between Premier Soccer League's Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in South Africa and is considered one of the most fiercely contested matches in African football. It was first contested on 24 January 1970. Matches between the two rivals attract a large fanbase.

The bidding process for hosting the tournament finals was open only to African nations. In 2004, the international football federation, FIFA, selected South Africa over Egypt and Morocco to become the first African nation to host the finals.

It is the provincial capital and largest city of Gauteng, which is the wealthiest province in South Africa. While Johannesburg is not one of South Africa's three capital cities, it is the seat of the Constitutional Court. The city is located in the mineral-rich Witwatersrand range of hills and is the centre of large-scale gold and diamond trade.
