The 2017 New York Mets season was the franchise's 56th season and the team's ninth season at Citi Field. The Mets opened the season on April 3 against the Atlanta Braves and finished the season on October 1 against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.
Just two years removed from a World Series appearance, the Mets had high expectations. [1] [2] However, the season was a major disappointment with injuries to key players, poor performances from players such as Yoenis Cespedes, Matt Harvey, and Robert Gsellman, and by controversy within the organization and around players. [3] [4] The Mets thus finished in the 4th place in their division, missed the playoffs for the first time since 2014, and equaled their worst record since 2009. Manager Terry Collins announced his retirement following the final game of the season.
On November 14, 2016, second baseman Neil Walker accepted a qualifying offer, returning to the Mets for $17.2 million.
On October 29, 2016, Yoenis Cespedes re-signed with the Mets for $110 million for 4 years. This was the Mets second biggest free agent signing in their history at the time after Carlos Beltran's $119 million deal in 2005.
On January 27, 2017, Jerry Blevins re-signed with the Mets for a one-year deal with an option for 2018.
Fernando Salas re-signed with the Mets for a one-year deal.

Yoenis Céspedes Milanés, nicknamed "La Potencia", is a Cuban-born former professional baseball outfielder. He made his Major League Baseball (MLB) debut on March 28, 2012, for the Oakland Athletics, and has also played in MLB for the Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, and New York Mets. Primarily a left fielder in his early career, he split between left and center field on the Mets. A right-hand batter and fielder, he stands 5 feet 10 inches (1.78 m) tall and weighs 220 pounds (100 kg).
The 2007 Atlanta Braves season was the 42nd season in Atlanta and the 137th overall. They attempted to recapture the NL East title, which they had relinquished in 2006 for the first time since joining the division in 1994. They opened their season with a sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies.
The 2008 Atlanta Braves season was the 43rd in Atlanta and the 138th overall. The Braves attempted to reclaim a postseason berth for the first time since 2005. They were once again skippered by Bobby Cox, now in his 19th season managing Atlanta. As a result of John Schuerholz taking the position of team president, the Braves entered the offseason with Frank Wren as their general manager.
The 2008 New York Mets season was the franchise's 47th season. The Mets finished the season with an 89–73 record, second place in the National League East, three games behind the Philadelphia Phillies, and one game worse than the wild card winners, the Milwaukee Brewers. The Mets were eliminated from postseason play on their last day of the regular season by the Florida Marlins for the second straight year, which also left New York without a team in the postseason for the first time since 1993, as the crosstown rival Yankees were eliminated from contention just five days prior.
The Oakland Athletics' 2012 season was the organization's 45th in Oakland, California and the 112th in club history. The team finished with a final record of 94–68, claiming first place in the American League West and reaching the postseason for the first time since 2006. After winning their last game of the season, they took sole possession of the West for the first time all year, overtaking the Texas Rangers. The A's had trailed Texas by 13 games on June 30, and had a five-game deficit with nine days left in the season. The 2012 team, which led the league with 15 walk-off wins, managed this with the second-lowest payroll in baseball, at $59.5 million. They lost in five games to the Detroit Tigers in the Divisional Series.
The 2014 New York Mets season, was the 53rd season of the franchise. It was also their 6th season at Citi Field. The Mets finished 79–83, their most wins since the 2010 season. Also, the Mets finished tied for 2nd place in the National League East, their highest place in the standings since 2008.
The 2015 New York Mets season was the 54th season in the franchises' history. The Mets finished the regular season with a record of 90–72, winning the National League East title on September 26, their first division title since 2006 and sixth overall. They defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Division Series in five games and swept the Chicago Cubs in the National League Championship Series. They lost to the Kansas City Royals in five games in the 2015 World Series. It was the Mets' first appearance in the World Series since 2000 when they lost to the New York Yankees. It marked the team's first winning season since Citi Field opened in 2009.

The 2016 New York Mets season was the franchise's 55th season. The Mets opened the season against their 2015 World Series opponent, the Kansas City Royals. This was the first time in the history of the league that World Series opponents played a rematch on Opening Day. This was made possible by interleague play being scattered throughout the season. Despite being below .500 (60–62) as late as August 19, the Mets went 27–13 in their final 40 games to make the postseason in consecutive seasons for the second time in franchise history. They lost to the San Francisco Giants in the Wild Card Game.
The 2017 Atlanta Braves season was the Braves' 52nd season in Atlanta and 147th overall. This was the Braves' first season at SunTrust Park, after playing the previous 20 seasons at Turner Field. The Braves began the season on April 3 at Citi Field against the New York Mets and finished the season on October 1 against the Miami Marlins at Marlins Park. On September 22, 2017, the Braves were eliminated from postseason play.
