It is the second edition of the tournament for the men and the first for the women. The tournament took place in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, from 20–26 September for the men, and from 27 September to 2 October for the women.

The tournament did not take place in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The singles part of the tournament had 32 competitors. Patricia Maria Țig was the defending champion, having won the previous edition in 2019, but chose not to participate. Mayar Sherif won the title, defeating Martina Trevisan in the final, 6–3, 6–2.

The tournament was previously held in 2019 after the COVID-19 pandemic forced the double postponement of the event.

It was the first event since 2019, with the 2020 and 2021 events cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

It was her 17th WTA Tour singles title and her second Strasbourg title. Ranked world No. 508, Svitolina won her first title since returning from a 14-month maternity leave hiatus, and became the fourth-lowest ranked title winner in WTA history. She is the fifth wildcard in tournament history to win the title, joining defending champion Angelique Kerber, Samantha Stosur, Maria Sharapova, and Steffi Graf.

The tournament was upgraded to WTA 500 level for the first time since 2008 when it was last held as a WTA Premier tournament.
