This was the qualifying process for the 2022 Rugby World Cup Sevens with the aim of selecting the men's national rugby sevens teams that would compete in the tournament in Cape Town, South Africa. A total of 59 nations took part in the qualifying process.

General

The tournament was organized by World Rugby and held from 9 to 11 September 2022, with twenty-four teams competing. [1] [2] South Africa automatically qualified as hosts as well as the eight quarter-finalists of the 2018 Rugby World Cup Sevens. The other 16 teams qualified through their respective regional tournaments. [3]

Africa

14 teams competed in the Rugby Africa's Sevens tournament on 23–24 April 2022 in Kampala, Uganda contesting for the three qualifying spots. Uganda, Zimbabwe, and Kenya qualified for the World Cup. [4] [5] [6]

13 teams competed in the RAN Sevens Qualifiers on 23–24 April 2022 in Nassau, Bahamas contesting for the two qualifying spots, Canada and Jamaica were the two teams to qualify. [7] [8]

Nine teams competed in the Sudamérica Sevens tournament on 27–28 November 2021 in San José, Costa Rica, Uruguay and Chile were the two teams to book their World Cup spots. [9] [10]

Europe

Twelve teams competed in the European Qualifiers for the four available spots on 16–17 July 2022 in Bucharest, Romania. Ireland, Germany, Portugal, and Wales were the teams to qualify; Germany qualified for their first Sevens World Cup. [14] [15]

Oceania

Oceania was unable to hold any qualifying tournament due to the ongoing impacts of COVID-19 in 2021 and 2022. Fiji and New Zealand had qualified automatically as quarterfinalists from the 2018 Sevens World Cup. Australia and Samoa qualified due to finishing 4th and 12th, respectively, in the 2019–20 World Rugby Sevens Series. [16] Tonga was given the final spot by placing 5th in the 2019 Oceania Sevens. The 2017 Oceania Sevens Championship was the tenth Oceania Sevens in men's rugby sevens. It was held at ANZ Stadium in Suva, Fiji on 10–11 November 2017. The tournament was won by Fiji who defeated New Zealand 26–0 in the final.

The qualification process for the inaugural women's tournament of the 2009 Rugby World Cup Sevens. There are no automatic qualifiers, so all national teams qualified by way of regional tournaments. Unlike the men's tournament, the Arabian Gulf did not prequalify as hosts. The qualification process allocated two slots for Africa, two for North America/West Indies, one for South America, three for Asia, six for Europe and two for Oceania.

The Poland women's national rugby sevens team represents Poland in rugby sevens. They compete in the Rugby Europe Women's Sevens. Poland placed second overall at the 2021 Rugby Europe Women's Sevens Championship Series. They helped Kazakhstan prepare for the Olympic qualifiers.

Twelve teams qualified for men's rugby sevens at the 2020 Summer Olympics. Japan automatically qualified as host, with the top four teams of the 2018–19 World Rugby Sevens Series securing their spots. Afterwards, qualification was determined with each of the six continental confederations determining a representative, and the remaining qualification spot determined through an international sevens tournament.

The qualification process for the 2021 Rugby World Cup began on 9 August 2019 with 12 teams qualifying to the tournament which will be held in New Zealand. The 2021 Rugby World Cup was postponed by one year in March 2021 to 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
