The 2022 Tasmanian local elections were held in October 2022 to elect the councils of the 29 local government areas (LGAs) in Tasmania, Australia. Mayoral and deputy mayoral elections were also held. [1]
For the first time in Tasmanian local elections, voting was compulsory. Polls opened on 3 October and closed at 2pm on Tuesday, 25 October. [2]
Councillor elections are conducted using a slightly modified version of the Hare-Clark electoral system, which is also used for Tasmanian House of Assembly elections. [3] Mayors and deputy mayors are elected using preferential voting, which is used for Tasmanian Legislative Council elections. [3]
The Robson Rotation is used to rotate the order in which candidate names appear on ballot papers. All voting in Tasmanian local elections is conducted by post. [1] [3]

A number of local tickets were formed to contest elections. In Hobart, Our Hobart and Your Hobart Independents (YHI) were formed, with councillors Mike Dutta, Anna Reynolds and Zelinda Sherlock joining the YHI ticket. [4] In Kingborough, three independents stood as Kingborough Thrives candidates. [5]
Former Liberal Democrats NSW senator Duncan Spender stood in Hobart as a deputy mayoral and council candidate. [6]
Four mayoral elections, along with one deputy mayoral election, were uncontested, as well as the entire King Island council election. [7]

Former Nationals senator Steve Martin was elected as a councillor in Devonport, giving the party an elected representative for the first time since he lost re-election at the 2019 federal election. [8]
Mary Duniam, the mother of Liberal senator Jonathon Duniam, became the first female mayor of Waratah-Wynyard. [8]
Launceston mayor Danny Gibson resigned in May 2023, just months after being elected, following "vile attacks, stemming from media reports". [9]
The Tasmanian Electoral Commission has held a number of by-elections and countbacks to fill vacancies on councils since the 2022 elections. [10] [11]

The House of Assembly, or Lower House, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of Tasmania in Australia. The other is the Legislative Council or Upper House. It sits in Parliament House in the state capital, Hobart.

Paula Catherine Wriedt is an Australian former politician. She was a Labor Party member of the Tasmanian House of Assembly, representing the outer suburban Hobart seat of Franklin. She was first elected to parliament in the 1996 election. Wriedt is the daughter of former state Labor leader and Whitlam Government Minister for Agriculture Ken Wriedt.

Andrew Paul Harriss was an Australian politician. He was a Liberal Party member of the Tasmanian House of Assembly from March 2014 to February 2016, representing the electorate of Franklin.
Periodic elections for the Tasmanian Legislative Council were held on 2 May 2009. The three seats up for election were Derwent, held by Labor MLC Michael Aird; Mersey, held by retiring independent MLC Norma Jamieson; and Windermere, held by independent MLC Ivan Dean. These seats were last contested in 2003.
Susanne Lynnette Hickey is an Australian politician. She represented the electorate of Denison from the 2018 state election until her defeat at the 2021 election, sitting with the Liberal Party until March 2021, when she quit the party and became an independent. Hickey is currently Mayor of the City of Glenorchy.
Nicholas Adam Street is an Australian politician. He was elected to the Tasmanian House of Assembly in a countback conducted on 1 March 2016, to fill a vacancy caused by the resignation of Paul Harriss, and served until his defeat at the 2018 state election. He was then re-elected on 6 February 2020, filling a vacancy caused by the resignation of Will Hodgman.
Jonathon Roy Duniam is an Australian politician. He is a member of the Liberal Party and has served as a Senator for Tasmania since the 2016 federal election. He served as an assistant minister in the Morrison government from 2019 until May 2022, following the appointment of the Albanese ministry. Prior to entering parliament Duniam was a political staffer, including as deputy chief of staff to Tasmanian premier Will Hodgman.
