The 2022 Valletta Cup was a Twenty20 International (T20I) cricket tournament held in Malta between 10 and 15 May 2022. [1] It was the third edition of the Valletta Cup. The venue for the series was the Marsa Sports Club in Marsa. [2] The participating teams were the hosts Malta along with Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Gibraltar, Hungary and Romania. [3] Malta were the defending champions having defeated Switzerland in the final of the 2021 edition. [4] Bulgaria and Gibraltar returned after finishing the 2021 tournament in third and fourth places, respectively. [2] The Czech Republic and Hungary last featured in the 2019 Valletta Cup, in which the Czechs beat a Hungary XI in the final. [5]

In a round-robin game against Bulgaria, Gibraltar put on an unbeaten 213 runs for the first wicket, the fourth highest opening partnerships in T20Is. [6] Malta secured a place in the final on day three with a game to spare, after winning their first four matches. [7] Romania reached the final after a rapid run-chase against Gibraltar, and they went on to defeat the hosts by 9 runs in the final. [8] [9]

The 2018–19 ICC T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier was a cricket tournament that formed part of qualification process for the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup. Twelve regional qualifiers were held by the International Cricket Council (ICC), with 62 teams competing during 2018 in five regions – Africa, Americas (2), Asia (2), East Asia Pacific (2) and Europe (3). The 2019 Valletta Cup, the inaugural edition of the Valletta Cup, was a Twenty20 cricket tournament held in Malta between 17 and 20 October 2019. The participating teams were the hosts Malta along with Czech Republic, Iceland and a Hungary XI. Matches played between Malta and the Czech Republic had official Twenty20 International (T20I) status, but because Iceland were not an Associate Member of the ICC and the selected Hungarian squad was not an official national side, matches involving either of these teams did not have T20I status. The matches were played at Marsa Sports Club in Marsa. The Hungarian XI won all of their round-robin matches and their semi-final, but were beaten by the Czech Republic in the final.

The 2019 Hellenic Premier League (HPL) was a Twenty20 International (T20I) cricket tournament held in Gouvia, Corfu, Greece between 14 and 19 October 2019. The participating teams were the hosts Greece, along with Bulgaria, Serbia and three Greek club sides. All of the national teams played their first matches with T20I status during the tournament, following the decision of the International Cricket Council (ICC) to grant full Twenty20 International status to all its members from 1 January 2019.

The 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier was a cricket tournament that was played as part of qualification process for the 2022 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. The sub regional tournaments were scheduled to take place in June and July 2021 in Finland and Belgium, with the regional final taking place in October 2021 in Spain. In April 2018, the International Cricket Council (ICC) granted full international status to Twenty20 men's matches played between member sides from 1 January 2019 onwards. Therefore, all the matches in the Regional Qualifiers were played as Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is).

The 2020 Luxembourg T20I Trophy was a Twenty20 International (T20I) cricket tournament that was played in Luxembourg from 28 to 30 August 2020. The participating teams were the hosts Luxembourg, along with Belgium and Czech Republic. The matches were played at the Pierre Werner Cricket Ground in Walferdange. These were the first official T20I matches to be played in Luxembourg since the International Cricket Council announced that all matches played between Associate Members from 1 January 2019 would be eligible for T20I status. The series was organised to provide players with some international cricket after the postponement of the 2019 T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier. Belgium won the series with a game to spare, ending with a perfect record of four victories.

The Malta cricket team toured Bulgaria in September 2020 to play four Twenty20 International (T20I) matches. The matches were played on 23 and 24 September at the National Sports Academy "Vasil Levski" in Sofia, and were the first official T20I matches played in Bulgaria since the ICC announced that all matches between its member nations would be eligible for this status. Following the T20I series, the two sides played an additional four friendly T20 matches in the town of Gabrovo, 200 km west of Sofia, with the Bulgarians using those matches to give chances to players who would be eligible to play official matches for the national team from 2021. Malta won the T20I series 2–0 after both matches on the second day were abandoned due to rain.

The Bulgaria cricket team toured Romania in October 2020 to contest the Balkan Cup over four Twenty20 International (T20I) matches. The matches were played between 16 and 18 October 2020 at the Moara Vlasiei Cricket Ground in Ilfov County. Romania's only previous official T20I matches were played in August 2019 during the Continental Cup, which was also hosted at the Moara Vlasiei Ground. Bulgaria lost their previous series against Malta a month prior to this tour. Bulgaria won the opening match, but Romania took both matches on the second day. The Bulgarians were bowled out for only 60 runs in the final game and Romania went on to claim the series 3–1.

The 2021 Central Europe Cup was a Twenty20 International (T20I) cricket tournament played in Prague between 21 and 23 May 2021. The participating teams were the hosts Czech Republic, along with Austria and Luxembourg. Malta were also due to take part, but were forced to withdraw due on 6 May due to COVID-19 restrictions. The tournament was played in a double round-robin format, with all matches hosted at the Vinoř Cricket Ground in Prague.

The Belgium cricket team toured Malta in July 2021 to play five Twenty20 International (T20I) matches at the Marsa Sports Club in Marsa. The Maltese team had been due to play a four-match series in Belgium in 2021, but this was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As preparation for the series, the Belgium team were scheduled to play four T20 exhibition games against the Netherlands A cricket team in June 2021, but these matches were later cancelled. Malta were declared winners of the fourth T20I after five penalty runs were retrospectively added to their total. Belgium won the series 3–2.

The 2021 Sofia Twenty20 tournament was a Twenty20 International (T20I) cricket tournament held in Bulgaria in June 2021. The tournament was played at the National Sports Academy in Sofia and was arranged to mark 20 years since the founding of the Bulgarian Cricket Federation. In addition to the hosts Bulgaria, the competing nations were Greece, Romania and Serbia. The tournament consisted of a round-robin stage, followed by semi-finals and a final.

The 2022–23 ICC Men's T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier was a cricket tournament that formed part of the qualification process for the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. In May 2022, the International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed all the fixtures and venues for the three sub-regional Qualifiers.

The 2022 Central Europe Cup was a Twenty20 International (T20I) cricket tournament that was played in Prague between 8 and 10 July 2022. The participating teams were the hosts Czech Republic, along with Austria and Luxembourg – the same sides that competed in the previous edition of the tournament. The tournament was being played in a double round-robin format. This was the eighth edition of the Central Europe Cup, with Austria the defending champions after having won on their debut at the Central Europe Cup in 2021.

The Malta cricket team toured Belgium in June 2022 to play three Twenty20 International (T20I) matches. The series provided both sides with preparation for the 2022 ICC Men's T20 World Cup Europe sub-regional qualifier tournaments.

The Valletta Cup is a recurring Twenty20 International cricket tournament for associate members of the International Cricket Council in Europe. It is organised by the Malta Cricket Association, with the format being round-robin matches followed by a final; all matches are played at the Marsa Sports Club in Marsa, Malta. The first edition was held in 2019.
