The Afghan cricket team toured Zimbabwe between 8 and 29 October 2015. The tour consisted of five One Day International (ODI) matches, two Twenty20 Internationals (T20I) and two tour matches. This was the first time that Afghanistan had played a five-match bilateral ODI series.

The 2017 season was reported to be played from 18 to 28 July 2017, but took place in September 2017, with the Kabul International Cricket Ground hosting all the matches.
Mujeeb Ur Rahman Zadran is an Afghan cricketer, who plays for the Afghanistan national cricket team. Two months after his international debut, at the age of 16 years and 325 days, he became the youngest player to take a five-wicket haul in a One Day International match. He was one of the eleven cricketers to play in Afghanistan's first ever Test match, against India, in June 2018. It was also his first-class cricket debut. His uncle, Noor Ali Zadran, is also an Afghan international cricketer.
The Ireland cricket team toured the United Arab Emirates in December 2017 to play three One Day Internationals (ODIs) against the Afghanistan cricket team. The matches were used as a warm-up for the 2018 Cricket World Cup Qualifier, which took place in Zimbabwe in March 2018. Ireland won the series 2–1.
The Zimbabwe cricket team toured the United Arab Emirates to play the Afghanistan cricket team in February 2018 to play two Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) and five One Day International (ODI) matches. Initial reports suggested that it would include Afghanistan's first Test match since being awarded Test status by the International Cricket Council in June 2017, but instead the tour consisted of just limited overs matches. An official from Zimbabwe Cricket said that both sides were still in talks to play a Test match, but that would be at some point after the 2018 Cricket World Cup Qualifier.

It was Afghanistan's first Test since they were awarded Test status by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in June 2017. India won the match in two days by an innings and 262 runs. Afghanistan were dismissed twice in the same day, only the fourth time this has happened in Tests. It was India's biggest win by an innings in Tests, and they became the first Asian team to win a Test match inside two days.

It was Ireland's first Test played overseas and the first Test match between the two sides. All of the fixtures took place at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Dehradun. The ODI fixtures were part of Afghanistan's preparation for the 2019 Cricket World Cup. In January 2019, the fixtures were brought forward by two days, to avoid clashing with the Indian Premier League.

The 2019–20 Bangladesh Tri-Nation Series was a cricket tournament that took place in September 2019. It was a tri-nation series between Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Zimbabwe with all the matches played as Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is).

The following month, the tour itinerary was changed slightly, bringing the matches forward by one week and reducing the number of T20Is from five to three.
The 2020 Shpageeza Cricket League was the seventh edition of the Shpageeza Cricket League, a professional Twenty20 cricket (T20) league established by the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) in 2013, and the third edition to have official T20 status. Following a request to the Ministry of Public Health due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the tournament was given approval in July 2020 to take place. The ACB also confirmed that it was their priority to run a successful tournament.

Ahmed Shah Pakteen was named as the on-field umpire for both Tests, becoming the first Afghan umpire to officiate in Test cricket.
The 2022 Shpageeza Cricket League was the eighth edition of the Shpageeza Cricket League, a professional Twenty20 cricket (T20) league established by the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) in 2013, and the fourth edition to have official T20 status. It was originally scheduled to run from 10 to 25 September 2021, with the number of teams increased from six to eight. However, no tournament took place in 2021, with the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) announcing that the tournament would be played in June and July 2022. The Kabul Eagles were the defending champions.

These matches formed part of the inaugural 2020–2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Super League. All three matches were played at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. Sri Lanka recovered from losing the first match, and the second encounter ending with no result due to rain, to level the series in the third game.
