The 2023 Pan American Water Polo Championships was the 10th edition of the continental championship, organised by the Swimming Union of the Americas. [1] It was the 10th and 8th men's and women's competition respectively. This is the first tournament since being renamed as the 2023 Pan American Water Polo Championships. The tournament was held in Bauru, Brazil. It acted as the continental qualification for the Water Polo at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships, and men's and women's FINA Water Polo World Cup Division 2, with the top two from each gender qualifying for both tournaments. However, in regards to the FINA Water Polo World Cup Division 2, each team that qualified declined the invitation.

In the men's event, Canada would win the trophy, by finishing first in the group. [2] Canada and, originally, Brazil, qualified for the Water polo at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships – Men's tournament by finishing top two in the tournament. But after the championship ended, Brazil had to withdraw due to financial constraints and were replaced by Argentina. [3] [4]

Format

The three teams played each other twice, with the winners of the group being crowned champions. [5]

In the women's event, Canada won the trophy, beating Brazil in the final. [2] Canada and, originally, Brazil, qualified for the Water polo at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships – Women's tournament by finishing top two in the tournament. But after the championship ended, Brazil had to withdraw due to financial constraints and were replaced by Argentina. [3] [4]

Format

The four teams played each other once, with first playing fourth and second playing third in the Semi-Finals. The winners of the Semi-Finals make the Final, while the losers compete for bronze. [5]

The water polo tournaments at the 2020 Summer Olympics took place at the Tokyo Tatsumi International Swimming Center in Kōtō. Twenty-two teams competed in the tournament, an increase of two from the previous editions. Men's Water polo was also the last final played before the closing ceremony.

Water polo competitions at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto was held from July 7 to 15 at the Markham Pan Am Centre in Markham. The water polo competitions was the first sporting event to be conducted at the games, beginning three days before the opening ceremony. This is because the Pan American Games were scheduled to be held roughly around the same time as the 2015 World Aquatics Championships scheduled for Kazan, Russia, thus the competition was moved forward to allow for a sufficient gap between the two events. A total of eight men's and women's teams competed in each respective tournament.

Water polo competitions at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru were held from July 28 to August 10. The venue for the competition was the water polo pool located at the Villa María del Triunfo cluster. A total of eight men's and eight women's teams competed in each tournament. This meant a total of 176 athletes were scheduled to compete.

The qualification for the 2020 men's Olympic water polo tournament allocated twelve teams quota spots: the hosts, the top team in the World League, the top two teams in the World Championships, five continental Olympic qualification tournament champions, and the three top teams at an Olympic qualifying tournament.

Water polo competitions at the 2023 Pan American Games are scheduled to be held from October 30 to November 4. The venue for the competition is the Aquatic Center, in Santiago, Chile. A total of eight men's and eight women's teams will compete in each tournament. This means a total of 192 athletes are scheduled to compete.

The 2023 FINA Women's Water Polo World Cup was the 18th edition of the tournament. It ran from 11 April to 25 June 2023. The Super final took place between 23 and 25 June 2023 in Long Beach, United States.

Two water polo competitions took place as part of the 2023 World Aquatics Championships, and were held between 16 and 29 July 2023 at the Marine Messe Fukuoka in Fukuoka, Japan.

The men's water polo tournament at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships was held from 17 to 29 July 2023. This was the 20th time that the men's water polo tournament has been played since the first edition in 1973.

The women's water polo tournament at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships was held from 16 to 28 July 2023. This was the 16th time that the women's water polo tournament has been played since the first edition in 1986. Netherlands won their second title after defeating Spain in the final.
