47th is a station on the Chicago Transit Authority's "L" system, located in the Grand Boulevard community area of Chicago, Illinois and serving the Green Line. It is situated at 314 E 47th Street, three blocks east of State Street. It opened on August 15, 1892, when South Side Elevated Railroad extended its service south to serve the Chicago World's Fair in 1893.

History

The original station, designed by Myron H. Church, was a brick building with some Queen Anne-style elements. 47th is typical of the other South Side Elevated Railroad elevated stations and consists of two side docks covered with tin canopies.

In July 1959, auxiliary exit stairs were added to the station.

In the early 1980s, it was decided that, given its state of disrepair, the station was to be completely replaced. In July 1981, a US$1 million project began with the demolition of the station's main entrance. In December of that same year, the southbound platform was reopened, and work began on the north platform. On May 7, 1982, it reopened in a much more utilitarian form than the original station, and normal service was resumed.

On February 21, 1993, the South Side Englewood-Jackson Park Line, formerly associated with the line to Howard to the north, is diverted by the Loop and Lake Street towards its current terminus of Harlem.

On January 9, 1994, the Green Line closed for a two-year renovation project. All stations on the line, including 47th, closed for renovation. Since 47th had been rebuilt in 1982, the station was only repainted and two elevators were built to make it accessible to people with disabilities. 47th station reopened with the rest of the Green Line on May 12, 1996.

The South Side Elevated Railroad was the first elevated rapid transit line in Chicago, Illinois. The line ran from downtown Chicago to Jackson Park, with branches to Englewood, Normal Park, Kenwood, and the Union Stock Yards. The first 3.6 miles (5.8 km) of the line opened on June 6, 1892. Much of its route is still used today as part of the Green Line of the Chicago "L" system.

58th was a station on the Chicago Transit Authority's Green Line in the Washington Park neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. The station was located at 320-24 E. 58th Street. 58th opened on January 22, 1893, as part of the South Side Elevated Railroad's expansion to serve the World's Columbian Exposition. The station closed with the rest of the Green Line on January 9, 1994, but did not reopen with the rest of the Green Line on May 12, 1996, because of its close proximity to the Garfield station.

Racine is an abandoned rapid transit station on the Chicago Transit Authority's Green Line. The station is located at 6314–16 South Racine Avenue in the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. Racine opened on February 25, 1907, when the Englewood branch of the South Side Elevated Railroad was extended westward. The station closed with the rest of the Green Line on January 9, 1994, but did not reopen with the rest of the Green Line on May 12, 1996.

29th was a rapid transit station on the Chicago "L"'s South Side main line. Originally constructed by the South Side Elevated Railroad company, it was one of the original ten stations opened on the Chicago "L", beginning service on June 6, 1892. The South Side Elevated Railroad merged operations with three other companies to form Chicago Elevated Railways (CER) in 1911, before merging outright with them in 1924 to form the Chicago Rapid Transit Company (CRT). Public ownership came to the "L" in 1947 with the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA).

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Dan Ryan branch</span>

The Dan Ryan branch is a 9.4 mi (15.1 km) long section of the Chicago "L" system located on the South Side of Chicago, Illinois. It is operated by the Chicago Transit Authority, as part of its Red Line service and is normally through-routed downtown towards the North Side via the State Street subway. As of February 2013, the branch serves 45,355 passengers per weekday. As part of the CTA's busiest rapid transit line, it is operated 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The branch serves the Chinatown, Armour Square, Fuller Park, Englewood, Greater Grand Crossing, Chatham and Roseland neighborhoods.

The South Side Elevated is a branch of the Chicago "L" system in Chicago, Illinois that is served by the Green Line. It has on average 12,509 passengers, counting branch divisions, boarding each weekday as of February 2013, according to the Chicago Transit Authority. The branch is 6.5 miles (10.5 km) long with a total of 8 stations, and runs from the Near South Side to the Washington Park neighborhood of Chicago.

The station is also the closest "L" station to the Museum Campus of Chicago and Soldier Field, which are about 12 mile (800 m) to the east. The Museum Campus/11th Street Metra station is also about 13 mile (500 m) to the east.
