Background and release
Lily Allen's part in the song is sampled from her 2009 single "Who'd Have Known", [4] which in turn resembles Take That's 2007 single "Shine". [5] Allen states that T-Pain initially heard her song while he was placed on hold by a store,and immediately looked her up after he was done. [6] After being approached with the new song idea by T-Pain,Allen stated she was "flattered by what he did to my original track." [6]
In 2011,T-Pain publicly expressed his frustration over a long-awaited Drake feature that had yet to materialize. [7] In a series of posts,he explained that the only thing holding up the release of his album rEVOLVEr was a missing verse from Drake —a verse that had reportedly been promised but never delivered. T-Pain told fans that the project was essentially finished aside from Drake’s contribution,even urging his followers to “find Drake”and tell him to hurry up with the verse. He also revealed that the track featuring Drake was intended to be the album’s next single,which was why no new single had been released yet. In short,the delayed verse wasn’t just slowing down the album —it was delaying the rollout of its next major song. [8] In a 2011 interview with Rolling Stone ,T-Pain revealed that the song "5 O’Clock" might’ve featured Drake,but he ultimately didn’t appear on it.. [9]
"5 O'Clock" was released on iTunes on September 27,2011,and was released to U.S. Top 40 radio stations on October 18,2011. The song was the last release by T-Pain under the now-defunct label Jive Records. [10] [11] The single was released in Allen's native United Kingdom on 4 December 2011. [12]
