Action (formerly Action Food Barns and Action Supermarkets) was an Australian supermarket chain.

Based in Perth, Action had 80 supermarkets across Western Australia, Queensland and New South Wales, and was one of the largest supermarket chains in Australia. Action Supermarkets Head Office was located at 218 Bannister Road Canning Vale WA 6155, Action's Fresh Produce Centre was located at 24 Walters Drive Osborne Park and Meat Centre at Pavers Circle Malaga.

FAL - Foodland Associated Limited

Foodland Associated Limited is one of Australia's largest public companies and conducts operations in Western Australia, Queensland, northern New South Wales and the North and South Islands of New Zealand.

The Group's core businesses are supermarket retailing and grocery wholesaling. FAL has five operating divisions with combined annual sales exceeding $5 billion, providing employment to over 28,000 staff throughout Australia and New Zealand.

Australia

FAL's Action supermarket chain trades through 43 stores in the Queensland and northern New South Wales and 38 stores in Western Australia.

FAL Wholesale supplies all of Western Australia's independent supermarket operators and co-ordinates the Dewsons, Supa Valu, Foodland and 4 Square banner franchise groups. FAL's FoodLink food service division supplies hotels, restaurants, cafes, institutions, schools and fast food outlets throughout Western Australia. The company also operates three Cash & Carry wholesale grocery warehouses.

New Zealand

Progressive Enterprises now operates 148 supermarkets trading under the Countdown, Foodtown and Woolworths banners and 26 Woolworths at Gull micromarkets and convenience stores. Progressive is also the franchise co-ordinator for the FreshChoice and SuperValue franchise banner groups.

Trading

Its generic brand range was called "Basics" and its corporate generic brand range was the "Signature Range". Action's last slogan was "Action means a great deal". Previous slogans included "Packed Full of Great Shopping Ideas" and "Packed Full of Good Taste".

Action served in excess of 750,000 customers every week and employed over 7,800 staff. Total supermarket trading area at the end of the November 2003 was approximately 159,000 square metres. Action still holds the largest trading floor area at Whitfords (Hillarys 4,500m) and Innaloo 5,200m.

Action's first supermarkets were located in Dianella, Dogswamp (Yokine), Morley, Woodlands and Osborne Park. Innaloo still holds the largest trading area in the southern hemisphere.

Demise

Action was originally operated exclusively in Western Australia (WA) by Foodland Associated Limited, [1] which was New Zealand's largest supermarket company and also operated the Supa Valu, Dewsons and Dewsons Express supermarkets in WA.

In 2001, Action had expanded into Queensland and northern NSW by purchasing 40 Franklins stores and associated distribution centres.

FAL was later sold to rivals Metcash (Australian licensee of the international IGA brand) and Woolworths in late 2005. [2] [3]

In March 2006, Metcash announced that it would convert its remaining Action-branded supermarkets into IGA-branded stores. By October 2007, the last of the stores had been converted or sold. [1]

Woolworths Group Limited, a major Australian company, has extensive retail interests throughout Australia and New Zealand. It is the largest company in Australia by revenue and the second-largest in New Zealand. In addition, Woolworths Group is the largest takeaway liquor-retailer in Australia, the largest hotel and gaming poker-machine operator in Australia, and was the 19th-largest retailer in the world in 2008.

Woolworths New Zealand is the second largest grocery company in New Zealand, with revenue of NZ$6.2 billion for the year to June 2018. Alongside Foodstuffs, Woolworths NZ forms part of the New Zealand supermarket duopoly.

IGA (supermarkets)

IGA, Inc. is an American chain of grocery stores that operates in more than 30 countries. Unlike the chain store business model, IGA operates as a franchise through stores that are owned separately from the brand. Many of these stores operate in small town markets and belong to families that manage them. It was founded in the United States as the Independent Grocers Alliance in 1926. The headquarters is in Chicago, Illinois.

SuperValu, Inc. is an American wholesaler and retailer of grocery products. The company, headquartered in the Minneapolis suburb of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, has been in business since 1926. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of UNFI.

Franklins

Franklins was a supermarket chain selling packaged groceries and perishables throughout New South Wales, Australia. It created the "No Frills" brand of generic products, promoted by their mascot, "Red Sock," and labelled itself "Australia's Original Discount Grocer." Franklins also had stores in Queensland, Victoria and South Australia until 2001. In 2011 the chain was bought by Metcash and the stores were sold off to independent buyers to operate as IGA or Aldi supermarkets. The last Franklins was at Westfield Miranda shopping centre; it closed in April 2015.

IGA (Australian supermarket group)

Independent Grocers Alliance (IGA) is an Australian chain of supermarkets. IGA is owned by Metcash, but individual IGA stores are owned independently. Its main competitors are Woolworths, Coles and Aldi Süd. It is the fourth largest chain, since Aldi overtook Metcash in supermarket revenues. In 2019 it was reported that IGA had 7 per cent of the grocery market.

BI-LO was an Australian supermarket chain owned by Wesfarmers. Once a chain of 180 outlets, BI-LO stores were progressively re-branded as Coles Supermarkets from 2006, or closed. On 30th of June 2017, the final store in Loganholme, Queensland closed.

Jewel Food Stores, was an Australian discount supermarket and frozen goods chain of 130 stores, now defunct. The company is now owned by Metcash and operates as IGA. The chain was originally owned and operated by the Fleming family, and was not related to the "Jewel" supermarket chain in the United States.

Foodland (South Australia)

Foodland is an Australian supermarket brand with 91 locations, primarily in South Australia, but also in the Northern Territory and New South Wales. The stores are independently owned and operated, although several operators own multiple stores. Large operators include Romeo's Retail Group, Commercial Retail Group and Eudunda Farmers. Romeo's Retail Group owns 39 supermarkets branded as Foodland, as well as others branded IGA and SupaIGA.

FoodWorks Independent supermarket chain in Australia

FoodWorks is an Australian supermarket chain run by independent retail group Australian United Retailers Limited (AURL). The AURL was created in November 2004 from the merger of the FoodWorks Supermarket Group Ltd (FSG) and Australian United Retailers (AUR). It is Australia's second largest leading independent supermarket retailing group, supporting in excess of A$1.35 billion in annual sales at the retail level. Its main competitors are Woolworths, Coles, IGA and Aldi.

SuperValue

SuperValue is a chain of locally owned and operated supermarkets in New Zealand, established in 1964. The stores are operated under franchise agreements, with franchise and group operation controlled by Wholesale Distributors Limited (WDL). WDL is a subsidiary of Woolworths NZ, which is a division of Woolworths Limited. There were about 40 SuperValue stores across New Zealand in November 2018.

Metcash

Metcash is an Australian conglomerate company distributing and marketing groceries, fresh produce, alcoholic beverages, hardware, and other consumer goods. Notable retailers the company owns include IGA, Mitre 10 and Home Timber & Hardware.

Friendly Grocer

Friendly Grocer is a small supermarket chain operating in Australia. The chain was founded in New Zealand in 1923 and expanded to Australia in 1956. Since the success of Four Square the 'Friendly Grocer' brand was introduced in 2006.

Shoprite (retailer) South African supermarket chain

The Shoprite Group of Companies, is Africa's largest food retailer. It operates more than 2,829 stores in 15 countries across Africa. The company's headquarters are in Brackenfell in the Western Cape province of South Africa. Shoprite Holdings Limited is a public company listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, with secondary listings on both the Namibian and Zambian Stock Exchanges. As of 2020, the Shoprite Group employed more than 141,000 people in more than 2,829 stores across the African continent.
