The Admiral Pereira da Silva class of frigates, also known as Admiral-class frigates, were in the service of the Portuguese Navy between 1966 and 1985. The class was based on the Dealey-class destroyer escort of the United States Navy. The three ships of the class were built in Portugal, at the Lisnave shipyards and the shipyards of Viana do Castelo. The construction of the ships was part of the effort of Portugal to expand its fleet in the face of unrest in the empire and was financed by the United States via the Mutual Defense Assistance Program. Financial problems prevented them from ever being modernised and they were deleted in 1989.
By the 1960s, Portugal retained an extensive empire and the vast majority of the Portuguese Navy's warships were dedicated to patrolling its waters. However, in that decade the empire saw unrest and invasion and the navy was expanded to meet those threats. Three ships were ordered from Portuguese shipyards to a modified design of the American Dealey-class destroyer escorts. [1] They were funded in the United States as hulls DE-1039, DE-1042 and DE-1046 under the Mutual Defense Assistance Program. [2] [3] The vessels were modified for service in tropical climates for service within the empire. [2] Rated as frigates by the Portuguese Navy, they measured 95.9 metres (314 ft 8 in) long overall with a beam of 11.18 m (36 ft 8 in) and a standard draught of 4.3 m (14 ft 1 in) and a maximum draught of 5.33 m (17 ft 6 in). The frigates had a standard displacement of 1,450 tonnes (1,430 long tons ) and 1,914 t (1,884 long tons) at full load. [4] They had a complement of 166 including 12 officers. [2] [4]
The Admiral Pereira da Silva-class ships were propelled by a propeller on a single shaft turned by a De Laval geared turbine creating 15,000 kilowatts (20,000 shp ). It was powered by steam from two Foster-Wheeler boilers creating 2,100 kilopascals (300 psi ) of pressure at 454 °C (850 °F). This gave the frigates a maximum speed of 27 knots (50 km/h; 31 mph). They carried 400 t (390 long tons; 440 short tons) of fuel oil giving them a range of 3,220 nautical miles (5,960 km; 3,710 mi) at 15 knots (28 km/h; 17 mph). [2]
The vessels were primarily designed for anti-submarine warfare (ASW). [5] They were armed with two twin-mounted 3-inch (76 mm)/50-caliber dual-purpose guns, with one turret forward and one aft. [lower-alpha 1] In the "B" position forward, the frigates mounted two four-barrelled Bofors 375 mm (14.75 in) anti-submarine rocket launchers. [2] [4] The Admiral Pereira da Silvas also mounted two depth charge throwers and two triple 324 mm (12.75 in) Mk 32 ASW torpedo tubes for Mark 44 torpedoes. [2] [6]
Admiral Pereira da Silva-class frigates were equipped with Mark 63 fire-control systems. They were also fitted with MLA-1B search, Type 978 tactical and SPG-34 fire control radars. Th three ships of the class were equipped with different sonar to reduce frequency interference. Admiral Pereira da Silva was given SQS-30, Admiral Gago Coutinho was given SQS-31 and Admiral Magalhães Correia was given SQS-31. All three vessels mounted SQA-10A variable depth sonar and DUBA-38 sonar. [2] [3]

All three ships were constructed in Portugal. [2] After they entered service, the Portuguese Empire was disassembled beginning in the 1970s and the Portuguese economy suffered as a result. This prevented the ships from ever receiving their planned refits and saw maintenance issues increase over their careers. [1] [7] They were intended to be replaced by Dutch Kortenaer-class frigates but Portugal acquired the Vasco da Gama-class frigates instead. [8] [9]
The 46 Knox-class frigates were the largest, last, and most numerous of the US Navy's second-generation anti-submarine warfare (ASW) escorts. Originally laid down as ocean escorts, they were all redesignated as frigates on 30 June 1975, in the 1975 ship reclassification plan and their hull designation changed from 'DE' to 'FF'. The Knox class was the Navy's last destroyer-type design with a steam turbine powerplant.
The Kortenaer class was a class of anti-submarine frigates of the Royal Netherlands Navy. Like other frigate types of the 1970s and 1980s, they featured a COGOG propulsion system with separate cruise and sprint gas turbines. Ten were built by De Schelde in Vlissingen and two by Wilton-Fijenoord in Schiedam between 1978 and 1982. Only ten served with the Royal Netherlands Navy: two were sold to Greece's Navy while still under construction and replaced by two Jacob van Heemskerck-class frigates which were an air defence variant of the Kortenaer class. The Greek frigates were renamed the Elli class. After service with the Dutch ended, eight of the frigates were sold to Greece in 1992 and the remaining two to the United Arab Emirates. Three of the ships have since been retired from active military service with one converted into the superyacht Yas.
The Claud Jones-class destroyer escorts were four destroyer escorts built for the United States Navy in the late 1950s. These ships were a diesel-powered version of the earlier Dealey class and were designed with the aim of producing a cheaper ship suitable for rapid production in wartime. These ships also had reduced armament and speed compared to their predecessors. They were not seen as effective anti-submarine warfare vessels by the United States Navy and were sold after only 15 years service to the Indonesian Navy.
The João Belo class, also known as Comandante João Belo class, is a class of four frigates of French design, based on the Commandant Rivière class but fitted for tropical service. Ordered by the Portuguese Navy in 1964, the four ships of this class were constructed at the shipyard in Nantes, France between 1965 and 1967. The first ship entered Portuguese service in 1967. The frigates were used for ocean patrol of Portuguese colonies and later, joined NATO's STANAVFORLANT unit. The first unit was discarded in 2003, followed by a second in 2004. The final two ships were taken out of service in 2008 sold to the Uruguayan Navy. The third ship was discarded in 2021, and the last ship was decommissioned on 12 August 2022.
USS Stein (DE-1065) was a Knox-class destroyer escort, later redesignated as a frigate (FF-1065) of the United States Navy. She was named after Tony Stein, the first Marine to receive the Medal of Honor for action in the Battle of Iwo Jima.
The Asashio-class submarine is a submarine class of Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force comprising four boats. This class is the successor of Ōshio. The class were the first fleet submarines constructed for post-war Japan. The first submarine was authorized as part of the 1963 shipbuilding programme. Their design improved on previous Japanese classes by being larger to obtain better seaworthiness with greater torpedo stowage. The class entered service in the late 1960s and remained as such until the mid-1980s when they were taken out of service.
The João Coutinho-class corvettes were a series of warships built for the Portuguese Navy for service in Portugal's African and Indian colonies. Initially rated as frigates, they were downgraded first to corvettes and then patrol vessels with age. They were designed in Portugal by naval engineer Rogério de Oliveira, but the urgent need of their services in the Portuguese Colonial War meant that the construction of the ships was assigned to foreign shipyards. Six ships were built; the first three ships were built by Blohm & Voss and the remaining three by Empresa Nacional Bazán. The ships were launched in 1970 and 1971. The relative cheap cost of the design led to it being the basis of several other classes in other navies. From 1970 until the end of the conflict in 1975, the corvettes were used for patrol and fire-support missions in Angola, Mozambique, Guinea and Cape Verde. After the African colonies gained their independence, the corvettes were assigned to patrol duties in Portuguese territorial waters.
The Baleares class were a group of five frigates built for the Spanish Navy in the late 1960s and 1970s. The ships were a modified version of the American Knox-class frigates. The key differences are the replacement of helicopter facilities by a medium-range surface-to-air missile system and associated radars. Constructed between 1968 and 1976, the Baleares class began entering service in 1973 and formed the 31 Escort Squadron, based at Ferrol. The five ships were upgraded several times during their service lives. The ships were retired beginning in the mid-2000s and replaced by the Álvaro de Bazán-class frigates on a one-to-one basis.
BAP Abtao (SS-42) is an Abtao-class submarine of the Peruvian Navy. The vessel which was originally named BAP Tiburón ("Shark"), was constructed by the American Electric Boat company in the United States and launched in 1953. The Abtao class were the last submarines constructed by the United States for the export market. The submarine entered service in 1954 and by presidential decree, was renamed Abtao for the battle during the Chincha Islands War.
The Abtao class were four submarines of the Peruvian Navy that entered service between 1954 and 1957. They are also known as the Lobo class and the Dos de Mayo class and were constructed in the United States to a design based upon the United States Navy's Mackerel class. They were the last submarines to be constructed by the United States for the export market. All four submarines were powered by a diesel-electric system and armed with six 21-inch (533 mm) torpedo tubes. Two of the submarines also mounted a 5 in (127 mm)/25 caliber gun. The four submarines, initially named for animals, were all renamed in 1957 for famous Peruvian battles. Beginning in 1991, the submarines were taken out of service, with the last decommissioned in 1999. One, BAP Abtao, is a museum ship located in Lima, Peru.
The Dealey-class destroyer escorts were the first post-World War II escort ships built for the United States Navy.
HNLMS Van Kinsbergen (F809) was a frigate of the Kortenaer class. The ship was in service with the Royal Netherlands Navy from 1980 to 1995. The frigate was named after Dutch naval hero Jan Hendrik van Kinsbergen.
HNoMS Oslo was an Oslo-class frigate of the Royal Norwegian Navy. The frigate was launched on 17 January 1964, and commissioned on 29 January 1968. Oslo ran aground near Marstein Island on 24 January 1994. One officer was killed in the incident. The next day, on 25 January, she was taken under tow. However as the situation deteriorated, the tow was let go and the frigate sank.
HNLMS Van Speijk (F802) was a frigate of the Van Speijk class. The ship was in service with the Royal Netherlands Navy from 1967 to 1986. The ship's radio call sign was "PAVA". She was sold to the Indonesian Navy where the ship was renamed KRI Slamet Riyadi (352). The ship was decommissioned in 2019.
KRI Oswald Siahaan (354) is an Ahmad Yani-class frigate operated by the Indonesian Navy. Prior to her service in the Indonesian Navy, she served in the Royal Netherlands Navy as Van Speijk-class frigateHNLMS Van Nes (F805).
HNLMS Van Galen (F803) was a frigate of the Van Speijk class. The ship was in service with the Royal Netherlands Navy from 1967 to 1987. The ship's radio call sign was "PAVB". She was sold to the Indonesian Navy where the ship was renamed KRI Yos Sudarso (353).
HNLMS Evertsen (F815) was a frigate of the Van Speijk class. The ship was in service with the Royal Netherlands Navy from 1967 to 1989. The ship's radio call sign was "PAVG". She was sold to the Indonesian Navy where the ship was renamed KRI Abdul Halim Perdanakusuma (355).
HNLMS Isaac Sweers (F814) is a frigate of the Van Speijk class. The ship was in service with the Royal Netherlands Navy from 1968 to 1990. The ship's radio call sign was "PAVF". She was sold to the Indonesian Navy where the ship was renamed KRI Karel Satsuitubun (356).
HNLMS Tjerk Hiddes (F804) was a frigate of the Van Speijk class. The ship was in service with the Royal Netherlands Navy from 1967 to 1986. The ship's radio call sign was "PAVC". She was sold to the Indonesian Navy where the ship was renamed KRI Ahmad Yani (351).
The Centauro class consisted of four frigates built for the Italian Navy during the 1950s. They entered service in 1957, with the last one being stricken in 1985.
