Alienum velamenus is an extinct animal from the late Ediacaran. Estimated to be about 541 million years old, A. velamenus has been identified as possibly being the oldest known vetulicolian, predating the first known species by 20 Ma. It was discovered in 2024 from the Dengying Formation in South China. [1]

The generic name Alienum is derived from the English word Alien, which further derives from the Latin word aliēnus, meaning "exotic/foreign". The specific name velamenus is derived from the Latin word velamen, meaning "veil/sail-like", relating to the sail-like shape of the anterior of the body. [1]
Alienum velamenus is the first possible vetulicolian found in the Ediacaran, partially sharing certain features seen in the clade, but not to the extent to allow for a proper assignment to the clade, alongside several defining vetulicolian features being absent.
It has a rounded body, which grew up to a max of 17.4 mm (1.7 cm), with the dorsal and ventral sides of the body being much thicker, suggesting it may have been soft-bodied with a cavity in the middle. The anterior part features two notches, a small arched notch further up with an unknown use, and a much deeper notch further down, suspected to be the mouth, with a little 'cashew' shaped flap nearby. Along the length of the body there is a 9 mm long stripe/groove, which can be compared to the pharyngeal groove structure of Vetulicolia, although in the case of Alienum, this extends diagonally backwards, whilst in Vetulicolians, this is an axial groove. Along this grove are three gill-like structures with large gill slits extending dorsally and ventrally through them, similar again to Vetulicolians, although they have five gill-like holes and gill slits. The posterior of the body features a stalk-like structure, around 5 mm in length, which is suggested to be the tail. [1]
Although it has many similarities to vetulicolians, it lacks a few important features, including dorsal fin-like structures, a hard chitinous body and a lack of lobes before the body, as well as being different in geological age, showing it is quite clearly more primitive if related to Vetulicolia. A chordate is a deuterostomal bilaterian animal belonging to the phylum Chordata. All chordates possess, at some point during their larval or adult stages, five distinctive physical characteristics (synapomorphies) that distinguish them from other taxa. These five synapomorphies are a notochord, a hollow dorsal nerve cord, an endostyle or thyroid, pharyngeal slits, and a post-anal tail.
Vetulicolia is a group of bilaterian marine animals encompassing several extinct species from the Cambrian, and possibly Ediacaran, periods. As of 2023, the majority of workers favor placing Vetulicolians in the stem group of the Chordata, but some continue to favor a more crownward placement as a sister group to the Tunicata. It was initially erected as a monophyletic clade with the rank of phylum in 2001, with subsequent work supporting its monophyly. However, more recent research suggests that vetulicolians may be paraphyletic and form a basal evolutionary grade of stem chordates.

Vetulicola is an extinct genus of marine animal discovered from the Cambrian of China. It is the eponymous member of the enigmatic taxon Vetulicolia, which is of uncertain affinities but may belong to the deuterostomes. The name was derived from Vetulicola cuneata, the first species described by Hou Xian-guang in 1987 from the Lower Cambrian Chiungchussu Formation in Chengjiang, China.
Pomatrum is an extinct vetulicolian, the senior synonym of Xidazoon; the latter taxon was described by Shu, et al. (1999) based on fossils found in the Qiongzhusi (Chiungchussu) Formation, Yu'anshan Member, Lower Cambrian, Haikou, (Kunming), about 50 km west of Chengjiang, China.
Banffia is a genus of animals described from Middle Cambrian fossils. The genus commemorates Banff, Alberta, near where the first fossil specimens were discovered. Its placement in higher taxa is controversial, with it mostly being considered to be a member of the enigmatic phylum Vetulicolia.
Vetulicolidae is a vetulicolian family from the Cambrian Stage 3 Maotianshan Shale and Sirius Passet Lagerstätte that consists of Vetulicola, Beidazoon, and Ooedigera. It is distinguished from the Didazoonidae by a harder body wall and the lack of an oral disc.
Banffozoa is an extinct class of bilaterians. Most workers place it in the Vetulicolia, but the protostome-like features of some members have motivated ongoing debate. Banffozoa consists of the order Banffiata as well as a dwarf "Form A" that has not been formally described or named. Skeemella has been placed incertae sedis in this class, but has more recently been placed with the Banffiidae. Banffozoa may be paraphyletic even if Vetulicolia is monophyletic.
Yuyuanozoon magnificissimi, from the Cambrian Stage 3 Chengjiang lagerstatte, is the largest known vetulicolian, with specimens up to 20 cm in length compared to 5–14 cm for other vetulicolian species.
Vetulicola cuneata is a species of extinct marine animal from the Early Cambrian Chengjiang biota of China. It was described by Hou Xian-guang in 1987 from the Lower Cambrian Chiungchussu Formation, and became the first animal under an eponymous phylum Vetulicolia.
Skeemella is a genus of elongate animal from the Middle Cambrian Wheeler Shale and Marjum lagerstätte of Utah. It has been classified with the banffozoan vetulicolians.
Branchiosauridae is an extinct family of small amphibamiform temnospondyls with external gills and an overall juvenile appearance. The family has been characterized by hundreds of well-preserved specimens from the Permo-Carboniferous of Middle Europe. Specimens represent well defined ontogenetic stages and thus the taxon has been described to display paedomorphy (perennibranchiate). However, more recent work has revealed branchiosaurid taxa that display metamorphosing trajectories. The name Branchiosauridae refers to the retention of gills.
Vetulicola rectangulata is a species of extinct animal from the Early Cambrian of the Chengjiang biota of China. Regarded as a deuterostome, it has characteristic rectangular anterior body on which the posterior tail region is attached. It was described by Luo Huilin and Hu Shi-xue in 1999.

Banfiidae is a family of extinct banffozoan animals from North America and China. The family name is sometimes spelt Banffidae. It includes Banffia, Heteromorphus, and possibly Skeemella. The family may be paraphyletic. The family may be paraphyletic. A Heteromorphus-like dwarf "Form A" is allied with this group at the class level, but has not been formally described or assigned to this family.
Vetulocystidae is the only family of the taxon Vetulocystida, which is a group of extinct deuterostomes of uncertain phylogenetic position. Vetulocystidae is made up of the genera Vetulocystis, Dianchicystis and Thylacocercus.
Perothops is a genus of false click beetles in the family Eucnemidae containing 3 species. They are known as beech-tree beetles or perothopid beetles. They are small as they are only 10–18 millimeters long. It is the only genus in the monotypic subfamily Perothopinae. They are dark-colored beetles that are found across the United States, generally in forests. The genus was discovered by Johann Friedrich von Eschscholtz in 1836. It used to be considered a family not part of Eucnemidae. The genus's name is from Greek, translating to "maimed/crippled eye" or "eye of little necklaces/bands", referring to the placement of perothopid eyes.
Heteromorphus is an extinct genus of banffiid from the lower Cambrian Chengjiang lagerstatte. It contains one broadly accepted species, Heteromorphus confusus, as well as a proposed junior synonym, Heteromorphus longicaudatus that may prove to be a separate species as additional specimens are examined. A much smaller species labeled "Form A" is allied with Heteromorphus at the class level but has not been formally described or assigned to Heteromorphus itself.
