Annapoorani is an aspiring chef. Though she wants to be well-versed in various kinds of non-vegetarian food, she is from a Brahmin family, where the members are compulsorily vegetarian. This proves an obstacle, as her father is the priest of the Srirangam temple, where he cooks the food offered as prasadam. Despite this, Annapoorani continues following her ambitions, going as far as secretly enrolling in a culinary school and breaking away from her family, culminating in her participating in a culinary competition and achieving her ambition of becoming a Corporate Chef.

Reception

Critical response

Annapoorani: The Goddess of Food received mixed reviews from critics. [15]

Janani K of India Today rated the film 2.5 out of 5 stars, saying it "could have been more delectable had it focused on selected ideas instead of feeling the need to force-feed messages on many topics." [16] M. Suganth of The Times of India rated the film 3 out of 5, saying "Nayanthara uses her screen presence to make us root for Annapoorani and her superstardom to spell out the messages of women empowerment that the film wants to convey." [17]

Raisa Nasreen of Times Now rated the film 3 out of 5, saying "Nayanthara's Culinary Triumph Unveiled In Feast of Tradition, Aspiration And Comedy." [18] Siddarth Srinivas of OnlyKollywood rated the film 3.25 out of 5, saying "On the whole, Annapoorani is a very good return for Nayanthara, in a film that is likely to entertain family audiences despite the drawbacks and some poor sensibility shots in the second half." [19]

Akchayaa Rajkumar of The News Minute rated the film 3.5 out of 5, saying "Despite its imperfect politics and occasional logical fallacies, Annapoorani makes for a refreshing watch, reminiscent of the wholesome, slice-of-life Tamil films before the era of big guns, ear-shattering explosions, and blood spill." [20] Sivapriya Anand of NETTV4U rated the film 3.5 out of 5, saying "Though the film has some negative points, it can be watched for the performances of the lead stars and some message to the society. Annapoorani – Watch-worthy!" [21]

P. Sangeetha of OTTplay rated the film 2.5 out of 5, saying "Nayanthara's Annapoorani: The Goddess of Food falls short of becoming a delectable spread due to its weak writing and long-drawn screenplay. A one-time watch." [22] Bharath Vijayakumar of MovieCrow rated the film 2.75 out of 5, saying "Annapoorani tries to pack in progressive thoughts in a simple (simplistic to be honest), feel good film. It offers a predictable menu, but it manages to be palatable to those who can buy into this simplistic world on screen. If the intention was to make a feel-good moral story and one that is majorly targeted at kids, Annapoorani does deliver the goods." [23]

Avinash Ramachandran of Cinema Express rated the film 2.5 out of 5, stating "For a film based on food, it is disappointing that Annapoorani doesn’t have those mouthwatering frames that make us hungry. The background score and songs by Thaman are too coercive and scream ‘empowerment’ a bit too vehemently. While I get what the makers were going for with the animated portions in the film, it didn’t come across, and it was as distracting as the increased use of the green screen in many scenes." [24]
