"What Hurts the Most" is a song written by American songwriter Jeffrey Steele and English songwriter Steve Robson. Initially recorded by country music artist Mark Wills in 2003 on his album And the Crowd Goes Wild, it was covered by Bellefire a year later. The first version to be released as a single was by pop singer Jo O'Meara in 2005, from the album Relentless. Later that year, country band Rascal Flatts covered the song as well, releasing it as the first single from the 2006 album Me and My Gang, topping the U.S country and adult contemporary charts with it. German band Cascada later had international chart success with the song in 2007. It was also covered by Eden in 2008.
Robert Swire-Thompson is an Australian musician, singer, songwriter, record producer and DJ, best known as the founder and vocalist of the drum and bass and electronic rock band Pendulum, as well as DJ and co-founder of electro house duo Knife Party formed of Swire and Gareth McGrillen. Originally from Perth, Western Australia, he relocated to the United Kingdom in 2003 with fellow Pendulum co-founders Gareth McGrillen and Paul "El Hornet" Harding. Swire has since fulfilled a broad spectrum of roles as a member of Pendulum, ranging from songwriting to singing while performing live with an unusual guitar-like MIDI controller – Starr Labs' Ztar Z6S-XPA. Swire also plays guitar, bass, keyboards, percussion, and other instruments. He is sometimes referred to by the stage name Anscenic.
Swedish House Mafia (SHM) is a Swedish house music supergroup consisting of Axwell, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso. The group officially formed in late 2008, were placed at number ten on the DJ Mag Top 100 DJ Poll 2011, and have been called "the faces of mainstream progressive house music", while being credited for "setting the tone for the EDM boom of the early 2010s, more than any other act in modern dance music". In 2012, they were ranked at number twelve on the DJ Mag Top 100 Poll. The trio is best known for their biggest hit single to date, "Don't You Worry Child".

Swedish progressive house supergroup Swedish House Mafia have released one studio album, two compilation albums, two live albums, two EPs, ten singles, and nine music videos. The trio formed during the mid-2000s whilst touring together and assisting each other in music production, and released the single "Leave the World Behind" in 2009, although all were assigned individual artist credits for the song. The group itself rose to prominence after performing a DJ set at the Cream Amnesia nightclub in Ibiza in 2008, and were later signed by record label EMI in 2010. Until One, a compilation album containing both their own material and mixes of songs by other artists, peaked at number 13 in Sweden and in the top ten of the album charts of The Netherlands and the Flanders region of Belgium: two singles, "One" and "Miami 2 Ibiza", both attained chart success across Europe, with the former topping the Dutch Top 40 and the latter reaching the top five of the Flanders chart, Irish Singles Chart and UK Singles Chart. "One" and "Miami 2 Ibiza" were certified septuple and quintuple platinum in Sweden by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI).

The song was created to promote a new drink for Absolut, Absolut Greyhound. It contains a sped-up sample of Hans Zimmer's "Time" from Inception movie score. It was used in the first episode of season 2 of the Spanish thriller television series Elite.
