Jonesboro is a city located on Crowley's Ridge in the northeastern corner of the U.S. State of Arkansas. Jonesboro is one of two county seats of Craighead County. In 2023, the city had a population of 81,969 and was the 5th most populous city in Arkansas at the time. In 2023, the Jonesboro metropolitan area had a population of 135,287 and a population of 179,932 in the Jonesboro-Paragould Combined Statistical Area.

Prior to becoming a four-year institution, the Rams previously competed in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) until after the 1963–64 academic year. The 1986–87 Arkansas State Indians men's basketball team was Arkansas State University from Jonesboro, Arkansas in the 1986–87 season. Led by third year head coach Nelson Catalina, Arkansas State made their first postseason appearance since their transition to NCAA Division I in 1975. Catalina remained head coach at ASU until 1995. Arkansas State faced University of Arkansas in the first round of the NIT, their only meeting in men's basketball.
