Ashim Ahluwalia (born 1972 in Mumbai, India) is a film director and screenwriter. He made his directorial debut with the feature-length documentary John & Jane (2005), which had a world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and a European premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival, and won him the 2005 National Film Award for Best First Non-Feature Film of a Director. [1] This was followed by his first narrative feature film Miss Lovely , premiered at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. [2] [3] which won him India's National Film Award – Special Jury Award (Feature film), and Best Production Design at the 61st National Film Awards. [4]

Working outside the mainstream Bollywood film system, [5] Ashim Ahluwalia is part of a new generation of Indian directors. [6] His unconventional films blur the lines between documentary and fiction. His short films have shown at the Tate Modern, [7] the Centre Pompidou and at the Venice Architecture Biennale. [8]

Early life

Ashim Ahluwalia grew up in Bombay, India. He attended the city's Cathedral and John Connon School before attending Bard College in upstate New York, from which he graduated with a BA in filmmaking in 1995.[ citation needed ]

Career

Ahluwalia began his film career with a series of experimental films made between 1993 and 2002. [9] His first short, The Dust (1993), was made by reworking home movies shot by his grandfather in the 1950s. [10]

He formed an independent production company, Future East, in 2005, providing an infrastructure for him to work outside mainstream film channels.

Ahluwalia was selected by the San Francisco Film Society as their Artist in Residence for 2013. [11]

In May 2013, he received the Charles Flint Kellogg Award in Arts and Letters from Bard College, his alma mater. [12] The award is "given in recognition of a significant contribution to artistic or literary heritage." [13]

In November 2013, he was selected to be on the jury of the 8th edition of the Rome Film Festival for the CinemaXXI section. [14]

In 2010, Ahluwalia was named "one of the ten best emerging film directors working today" by Phaidon Press in "Take 100: The Future of Film". [15]

Vanaprastham: The Last Dance is a 1999 Indo-French psychological drama period film in Malayalam-language that was directed by Shaji N. Karun. It was produced by Pierre Assouline and co-produced by Mohanlal. The screenplay was written by Karun and Raghunath Paleri based on a story by Assouline. It features Mohanlal in the lead role, with Suhasini Maniratnam, Mattannur Sankarankutty Marar, Kalamandalam Gopi, Venmani Haridas, and Kukku Parameshwaram in supporting roles. <i>Miss Lovely</i> 2012 film

Miss Lovely is a 2012 Indian drama film directed by Ashim Ahluwalia and set in the criminal depths of Mumbai's C-grade industry. Ahluwalia's debut feature follows the story of the Duggal brothers who produce sleazy sex-horror films in the mid-1980s. The plot explores the intense and mutually destructive relationship between younger sibling Sonu Duggal, played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui, and his elder brother, Vicky. Sonu finds himself drawn to a mysterious young woman named Pinky eventually leading to his downfall. Miss Lovely had its cinematic release on 17 January 2014. The film has received the National Film Award – Special Jury Award and Best Production Design at the 61st National Film Awards.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Gurvinder Singh</span> Indian film director

Gurvinder Singh is an Indian film director. He is best known for his Punjabi language films Anhe Ghore Da Daan, and Chauthi Koot which premiered at Venice and Cannes Film Festival respectively. Gurvinder is an alumnus of the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune from where he studied film-making and graduated in 2001. He travelled extensively through Punjab between 2002 and 2006, living and traveling with folk itinerants, documenting folk ballads and oral narratives. It led to his first documentary 'Pala'. He continued to make short experimental works and documenting arts/artists for the next few years. The 61st National Film Awards ceremony was an event during which the Directorate of Film Festivals of India presented its annual National Film Awards to honour the best films of 2013 in the Indian cinema. The ceremony was held on 3 May 2014.
