The event was won by Ghanaian Michael Ahey with a jump of 26 ft 5 in (8.05 m), setting a new Games record. Ahey won by 1 ft 3⁄4 in (32 cm), ahead of New Zealand's Dave Norris and Wellesley Clayton from Jamaica who won the bronze medal. [1]

David Dephoff was a New Zealand long jumper and decathlete, who won the bronze medal in the men's long jump at the 1950 British Empire Games in Auckland.
Jessie Mary Hayward is a former New Zealand high jumper and long jumper. She represented her country at the 1956 Summer Olympics and 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, winning a silver medal in the high jump at the latter event.
John Maxwell Carr was a New Zealand field athlete and coach, athletics official, and air force officer. He represented his country at the 1950 and 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, and served as a wing commander in the Royal New Zealand Air Force.
