The 2002 Ibero-American Championships in Athletics was the tenth edition of the international athletics competition between Ibero-American nations which was held at the Estadio Cementos Progreso in Ciudad de Guatemala, Guatemala on 11 and 12 May. A total of 328 athletes participated in the 44-event programme. The 3000 metres was introduced for both men and women, replacing the longer 10,000 metres event.

Baseball was contested at the 1930 Central American and Caribbean Games in Havana, Cuba. All of the games were played at the Estadio Cervecería Tropical, which was built especially for the games.

Athletics competitions have been held at the quadrennial Central American Games and open to member federations of the Central American Sports Organization since the inaugural edition of 1973 in Ciudad de Guatemala, Guatemala. The 1981 games were cancelled due to political instability. In 2006 the athletics events were not contested by Costa Rica, El Salvador or Panama. In 2010, Guatemala did not participate.
