Atputharajah Nadarajah (16 September 1963 - 2 November 1999), commonly known as Ramesh was a Sri Lankan Tamil journalist and politician. [1] He was Chief Editor of Thinamurasu a Tamil weekly. He was a member of the Sri Lankan Parliament from Jaffna District as a member of the paramilitary Eelam People's Democratic Party.He criticised his own party EDDP in his newspaper Thinamurasu and supported Tamil nationalism and the LTTE and leading to dispute with his party and leader Douglas Devananda. He was shot dead along with his driver in Colombo on 2 November 1999. [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]

Uthayan is a Tamil language Sri Lankan daily newspaper published by New Uthayan Publication (Private) Limited, part of the Uthayan Group of Newspapers. It was founded in 1985 and is published from Jaffna. Its sister newspapers is the Colombo based Sudar Oli. Uthayan was the only newspaper published from Jaffna which did not cease publication due to the civil war. The newspaper has been attacked several times, a number of its staff have been murdered by paramilitary groups and other forces, and it regularly receives threats.

Nandasena Gotabaya Rajapaksa is a former Sri Lankan politician and military officer, who served as the eighth President of Sri Lanka from 18 November 2019 until his resignation on 13 July 2022 due to months of public anger. He previously served as Secretary to the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development from 2005 to 2015 under the administration of his elder brother former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, during the final phase of the Sri Lankan Civil War.

Thiyagarajah Maheswaran was a Tamil Sri Lankan Member of Parliament (MP) from Colombo. He belonged to the main opposition United National Party and was critic of Rajapakse government's war against Tamil rebels. He was the former Hindu Affairs minister and a former Member of Parliament for Colombo District, escaped an assassination attempt on the final day of the 2004 election campaign in Colombo. He was assassinated by a gunshot on 1 January 2008 while worshipping at a Hindu temple with his family. Number of other devotees were also injured. The injured gunman has been apprehended and is in police custody in a hospital.

Maheswary Velautham was a founder of Forum for Human Dignity a non-governmental organization, and a human rights lawyer activist from Jaffna, Sri Lanka. She was known for tracking the status of returned failed refugee claimants from other countries to Sri Lanka particularly the West. According to pro-rebel Tamilnet news service she was killed by unknown gunmen on May 13, 2008, at her residence in the Jaffna peninsula. The government and Eelam People's Democratic Party to whose leader she had sometimes functioned as an advisor on Human Rights issues blamed the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam for her murder. Former EPDP member and aide to Douglas Devananda S.Ponnaiah claimed at a press conference in Jaffna Press Club that journalist Mylvaganam Nimalrajan, Atputharajah Nadarajah, K. S. Raja and Maheswary Velautham were killed by the EPDP for personal reasons.

Selvarajah Yogachandran, also known as Kuttimani was one of the leaders of the former Tamil militant organization TELO from Sri Lanka. He was arrested and sentenced to death, and was killed in the 1983 Welikada prison massacre along with the other TELO leader Nadarajah Thangathurai.

The Sunday Leader was an English-language Sri Lankan weekly newspaper published by Leader Publications (Private) Limited. It was founded in 1994 and is published from Colombo. Its sister newspapers are the Iruresa (Irudina) and the defunct The Morning Leader. Founded by brothers Lasantha Wickrematunge and Lal Wickrematunge, the newspaper is known for its outspoken and controversial news coverage. The district currently elects 9 of the 225 members of the Sri Lankan Parliament and had 529,239 registered electors in 2014.

The 10th Parliament of Sri Lanka was a meeting of the Parliament of Sri Lanka, with the membership determined by the results of the 1994 parliamentary election held on 16 August 1994. The parliament met for the first time on 25 August 1994 and was dissolved on 18 August 2000.

Freedom of the press in Sri Lanka is guaranteed by Article 14(1)(a) of the Constitution of Sri Lanka which gives every citizen "the freedom of speech and expression including publication". But under some government's there was widespread suppression of the media, particularly those critical of those governments. Polthutuwe Arachchige Jinadasa Niyathapala was a Sri Lankan politician and a former member and Senator of the Parliament of Sri Lanka and former General Secretary of the United National Party. A section of the Nawala Road was renamed as the Jinadasa Niyathapala Mawatha in recognition of services rendered by Niyathapala to Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte.
