Aurelia limbata, the brown-banded moon jelly, is a type of moon jelly that occurs in various places throughout the Pacific Ocean.

Taxonomy

Aurelia limbata is in the genus Aurelia, which is commonly called moon jellies. Aurelia is the most common and widely distributed species of jellyfish. [1] A. aurita is the closest relative to A. limbata, because they have a similar gene orientation [2] and the same life cycle. [3]

Description

Brown moon jellies have eight rhopalia (sensory structures) and numerous thin and long tentacles. [4] Their bell, or body, is 25–30 centimetres (9.8–11.8 in) in diameter. [3] [5] A. limbata has a cup-like calyx. [6] Most of the female A. limbata observed had golden yellow planulae that were located in brood pouches on their oral arms. [3]

Similar species

A. limbata was previously identified as Aurelia aurita , but it was eventually considered its own species. [7] They can be differentiated from A. aurita by the fact that A. limbata are larger, have a 16-scalloped umbrella, and are of chocolate brown color. [4] Additionally, A. limbata, a polar species, has mostly been found in Asian Pacific waters and close to Alaska, whereas A. aurita is common in nearshore waters. [7]

A. limbata may be a color morph of its cousin Aurelia labiata . [8]

Habitat and distribution

A. limbata can be found near Korea, Japan, Sea of Okhotsk, Alaska, and the Bering Sea. This species of moon jelly prefers cold waters [3] and is an epipelagic species, [3] preferring polar seas below 70°N. [7] Usually, species of the genus Aurelia are not found in deeper waters, but the brown-banded jelly prefers deeper waters and are highly active in them. [3] Aurelia typically performs vertical migrations at dusk. [9]

A. limbata medusae (motile, reproductive stage of development) have been observed in the benthopelagic layer, where they can be collected with a bottom trawl net and where they tend to aggregate from spring to fall. [3]

Behaviour

A. limbata swims against the current with an obliquely upward direction of its aboral surface; individuals swim vigorously with strong bell contractions. [5] A. limbata have temperature-dependent metabolisms. [10] A. limbata can be manipulated and ingested by ophiuroids (big group of echinoderms). [5]

Diet

Brown-banded moon jellies predate upon Larval decapods. [4]

Reproduction

Not much is known about their reproductive behaviour due to their occurrence at such deep depths, but they are known to reproduce asexually. [11] Strobilation can be induced by a period of low temperatures, and they strobilate throughout the year in low temperatures. [3]

<i>Phacellophora camtschatica</i> Species of jellyfish

Phacellophora camtschatica, commonly known as the fried egg jellyfish or egg-yolk jellyfish, is a very large jellyfish in the family Phacellophoridae. This species can be easily identified by the yellow coloration in the center of its body which closely resembles an egg yolk, hence how it got its common name. Some individuals can have a bell close to 60 cm (2 ft) in diameter, and most individuals have 16 clusters of up to a few dozen tentacles, each up to 6 m (20 ft) long. A smaller jellyfish, Cotylorhiza tuberculata, typically found in warmer water, particularly in the Mediterranean Sea, is also popularly called a fried egg jellyfish. Also, P. camtschatica is sometimes confused with the Lion's mane jellyfish.

<i>Tiburonia</i> Genus of jellyfishes

Tiburonia is a genus of jellyfish in the family Ulmaridae. It was reported in 2003, following the discovery of its only species yet identified, Tiburonia granrojo. It was discovered by a crew from MBARI led by George Matsumoto. Pieces of the medusae were collected for morphological analysis, which eventually led to sequencing and taxonomic identification. The discovery of this organism led to not only a new species, but a new subfamily of Ulmaridae, called Tiburoniinae. Its genus was named Tiburonia after the ROV the crew were using, called Tiburon, meaning "shark" in Spanish. Because of this ROVs distinct maneuverability, all angles of the organisms were able to be observed, which is particularly important to the study of gelatinous pelagic invertebrates. Its species name was originally to be called "big ugly", but Kirsten Matsumoto, George Matsumoto's wife, raised objections to this name, and renamed it granrojo, meaning "big red" in Spanish, leading to its English-language name, the Big Red Jellyfish.

Morbakka virulenta is a species of box jellyfish that is found in waters near the islands of Japan. The species was originally described in the genus Tamoya by Kamakichi Kishinouye in 1910. However, unlike other species of that genus, this jellyfish did not have the vertical gastric phacellae which protect the inside of the bell with nematocyst warts. As a result, it was reclassified to the genus Morbakka due to its distinctively shaped rhopaliar horns which resemble rabbit ears. Because of its painful stings, M. virulenta has been nicknamed Hikurage, which is “fire jellyfish” in Japanese.

Desmonema is a genus of jellyfish under the Cyaneidae family found in colder waters near the Antarctic region and off of the coast of Argentina. They have a bell diameter that can extend over 1 meter and wide tentacles that are grouped together in clusters. They share similar anatomical and physiological structures to the genus Cyanea. Their sophisticated structures like the thick tentacles, sensory systems, and gastrovascular system allow Desmonema to easily capture and extracellularly digest their prey. In recent years, Desmonema were reported to have a commensal relationship with fishes under the Trachurus genus and a parasitic relationship with specimens of the Hyperia genus. The genus name derives from the Ancient Greek desmós (δεσμός), meaning "bond", and nêma (νῆμᾰ), meaning "thread".

<i>Cyanea fulva</i> Species of jellyfish

Cyanea fulva, the Atlantic lion's mane jellyfish, is a species of jellyfish found along the Mid-Atlantic coastal region of the United States. C. fulva are commonly noted as being about two inches in diameter and smaller than C. capillata, however, larger than C. versicolor, a co-occurring close species. One distinctive feature present in mature C. fulva populations is their four mouth-part tentacles, containing a cinnamon color with the center of the main cavity being darker. At a young age, these jellyfish can have three appendages but often gain a fourth at more developed life cycle stages. C. fulva are also known for having less folds compared to C. arctica but more folds compared to C. versicolor. These folds are described as being remarkably thin and deciduous.

<i>Aurelia marginalis</i>

Aurelia marginalis is a species of the genus Aurelia. All species in the genus are very similar, and it is difficult to identify Aurelia medusae without genetic sampling.

Aurelia insularia is a species of true jellyfish in the family Ulmaridae. It is known via polyp type specimens found in waters off the coast of Brazil, around Ilha Grande.

Aurelia miyakei is a species of true jellyfish in the family Ulmaridae. It is found in the Gulf of Thailand and the Kwajalein Atoll.
