The 1998 Commonwealth Games, officially known as the XVI Commonwealth Games, were a multi-sport event held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The 1998 games were the first held in Asia and the last Commonwealth Games of the 20th century. For the first time ever, the games included team sports. The other bid from the 1998 games came from Adelaide in Australia. Malaysia was the eighth nation to host the Commonwealth Games after Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, Wales, Jamaica and Scotland. Around 3638 athletes from 70 Commonwealth member nations participated at the games which featured 214 events in 15 sports with 34 of them collected medals.

The KL Sports City in Malaysia is the largest sports complex in the country. It is located in Bukit Jalil, 20 km south of Kuala Lumpur. Described as the "sports complex in a park", it was the only one of its kind in the country or region when it was fully developed. It was officially inaugurated by the then-Prime Minister of Malaysia Mahathir Mohamad on 11 July 1998 ahead of the 1998 Commonwealth Games in which it staged the Games' opening ceremony. The complex was upgraded to KL Sports City in 2017 for the 2017 Southeast Asian Games.

The name Bunkface was suggested by Biak which was influenced from the Sum 41 song, titled "Crazy Amanda Bunkface". This ASEAN Para Games was the first edition held in history for Southeast Asia countries and also the first edition hosted by Malaysia.
The 2018 AFC U-16 Championship was the 18th edition of the AFC U-16 Championship, the biennial international youth football championship organised by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) for the men's under-16 national teams of Asia. It took place in Malaysia, which was appointed as hosts by the AFC on 25 July 2017, between 20 September and 7 October 2018. A total of 16 teams played in the tournament.
The 2022 Sukma Games, officially known as the 20th Sukma Games and commonly known as MSN 2022, was a multi-sport event that was held in Kuala Lumpur from 16 September until 24 September 2022. The Games were originally scheduled to be held in Johor in July 2020. However, they were postponed until 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with the National Sports Council (NSC) replacing Johor as host.
