The BMW F06/F12/F13 is the third generation of the BMW 6 Series range of grand tourers, and was launched in late 2011 as the successor to the E63/E64 6 Series. The body styles of the range are:
The BMW 6 Series is a range of grand tourers produced by BMW since 1976. It is the successor to the E9 Coupé and is currently in its fourth generation.
A grand tourer (GT) is a car that is designed for high speed and long-distance driving, due to a combination of performance and luxury attributes. The most common format is a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive two-door coupé with either a two-seat or a 2+2 arrangement.
The second generation of the BMW 6 Series consists of the BMW E63 and BMW E64 grand tourers. The E63/E64 generation was produced from 2002 to 2010 and is often collectively referred to as the E63.
A sedan — also saloon — is a passenger car in a three-box configuration with separate compartments for engine, passenger, and cargo.
A convertible or cabriolet is a passenger car that can be driven with or without a roof in place. The methods of retracting and storing the roof vary between models. A convertible allows an open-air driving experience, with the ability to provide a roof when required. Potential drawbacks of convertibles are reduced structural rigidity and cargo space.
A coupé or coupe is a passenger car with a sloping rear roofline and generally two doors.
The F06/F12/F13 uses a shortened version of the F10 5 Series platform and shares many features with the 5 Series.
The BMW F10/F11/F07/F18 is the sixth generation of the BMW 5 Series, which was produced from 2010 to 2017. The body styles of the range are:
Coupé models ended production in October 2017, [1] and the convertible and Gran Coupé models were discontinued in 2018. [2] [3] The 6 Series has since been replaced by the 8 Series model range. [4]
The second generation of the BMW 8 Series consists of the BMW G14, BMW G15 and BMW G16 grand tourers. The G14/G15/G16 generation has been produced from 2018 until the present, and is often collectively referred to as the G15.
The new 6 Series was first shown as the "BMW Concept 6 Series" coupé concept car at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. [5] [6] The exterior was designed by Nader Faghihzadeh, [7] [8] and the interior by Christian Bauer. [9]
A concept car is a car made to showcase new styling and/or new technology. They are often shown at motor shows to gauge customer reaction to new and radical designs which may or may not be mass-produced. General Motors designer Harley Earl is generally credited with inventing the concept car, and did much to popularize it through its traveling Motorama shows of the 1950s.
The 2010 Paris Motor Show took place from 2 October to 17 October 2010, in Paris expo Porte de Versailles.
Nader Faghihzadeh is an Iranian-German Automobile Designer based in Munich. He is a Car Designer at BMW Design and was responsible for the Interior Design of the BMW 7 Series (F01/F02), the Exterior Design of the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé, Coupé and Convertible (F06/F12/F13) and the Exterior Design of the BMW 7 series (G11/G12).
Unusually for BMW, the production version of the convertible was released before the coupé. The convertible version was officially introduced in January at the 2011 North American International Auto Show, while the coupé was introduced in April at the Shanghai Auto Show and New York Auto Show. The Gran Coupé was introduced at the 2012 New York Auto Show.
Auto Shanghai, officially known as the Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition, is a biennial international automobile show that alternates with the Beijing Auto Show as China's yearly international automotive exhibition. First held in 1985, Auto Shanghai is the nation's oldest auto exhibition, and is considered as an important major international auto show.
Initial models included the 640i and 650i, while 640d and 650i xDrive models were later added to the lineup. [10]
The F06 Gran Coupé is the four-door coupé variant of the 6 Series, and was launched on June 2012 at the Geneva International Motor Show. [11] The design of the Gran Coupé was inspired by the 2007 BMW CS Concept. [12] [13] [14] The wheelbase of the Gran Coupé is 117 mm (4.6 in) longer than the F13 coupé, [15] and the same length as the BMW F10 5 Series. Compared with the F13 coupé, the body is 112 mm (4.4 in) longer, and 23 mm (0.9 in) taller. [16] The Gran Coupé has a 4+1 seating arrangement, meaning there are two full-size rear seats, and one smaller rear middle seat. [17] Production ended in September 2018. [18]
The first convertible models were released in March 2011, [19] with production ending in February 2018.
The first coupé models were released in June 2011. [20] Production ended on October 2017.
The F06/F12/F13 6 Series introduced selectable driving modes with ECO PRO, Comfort, and Sport, affecting the acceleration, transmission shift points, and climate control system. Convertible models feature sun reflective front seats, and Gran Coupé models feature 60:40 split-folding rear seats. 6 Series models are also available with the M Sport package, featuring M exterior and interior styling, LED foglights, 19-inch alloy wheels, sports seats, and an Alcantara interior. Additional options include automatic parking, a Bang & Olufsen surround sound speaker system, and the xDrive all-wheel drive system.
Most models were only available with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The M6 models were available with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (called "M-DCT"), and a 6-speed manual transmission in the United States. [21]
Top speed for all models is electronically limited to 250 km/h (155 mph), except for the Alpina B6.

The M6 version was produced in convertible (F12), coupé (F13) and four-door coupé (F06) body styles. It was launched in the coupé body style alongside the standard 6 Series Gran Coupé at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, [24] and at the Auto Mobil International Leipzig in convertible form. [25]
It is powered by the S63 4.4 litre twin-turbo V8. In most countries, the only transmission offered was a Getrag 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (called "M-DCT"). In the United States, a 6-speed manual transmission was also available. [26]
Compared to the standard car, the M6 features M-styling, merino leather upholstery, an M-specific head-up display, and a carbon fibre roof. [27]
The B6 Gran Coupé xDrive was launched in 2014 and is a high performance model based on the 650i, made by Alpina. [28] It shares the 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 found in the B5 BiTurbo and produces 397 kW (532 hp) and 730 N⋅m (538 lb⋅ft), with a top speed of 318 km/h (198 mph). [29] B6 models receive 20-inch alloy wheels, aerodynamic elements, and exclusive trim and paint options. [30] In 2015, the B6 was refreshed and received performance improvements of 59 kW (79 hp) and 70 N⋅m (52 lb⋅ft), and now has a top speed of 324 km/h (201 mph). [31]
The B6 is manufactured alongside the regular 6 Series in Dingolfing, and is then completed with remaining components at the Alpina factory in Buchloe, Bavaria. [32] [33] It is sold by BMW in the United States and Canada, and is also independently sold by Alpina in other countries.
