Barisal-5 is a constituency represented in the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) of Bangladesh since 2019 by Zahid Faruk of the Awami League.
The constituency encompasses Barisal City Corporation and Barisal Sadar Upazila. [2] [3]
The constituency was created for the first general elections in newly independent Bangladesh, held in 1973.

In October 1991, Abdur Rahman Biswas became President of Bangladesh, vacating his parliamentary seat. [17] M. R. Sarwar was elected in a December 1991 by-election. [18]

Barisal Division is one of the eight administrative divisions of Bangladesh. Located in the south-central part of the country, it has an area of 13,644.85 km2 (5,268.31 sq mi), and a population of 9,100,102 at the 2011 Census. It is the least populous Division within the entirety of Bangladesh. It is bounded by Dhaka Division on the north, the Bay of Bengal on the south, Chittagong Division on the east and Khulna Division on the west. The administrative capital, Barisal city, lies in the Padma River delta on an offshoot of the Arial Khan River. Barisal division is criss-crossed by numerous rivers that earned it the nickname Dhan-Nodi-Khal, Ei tin-e Borishal.
Shah Moazzem Hossain was a Bangladesh Nationalist Party politician and the last Deputy Prime Minister of Bangladesh. He was elected as the Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Rangpur-6 constituency as a Jatiya Party candidate in a by-election in September 1991 and served until November 1995.
