There were a total of four bids which were initially submitted for the 2022 Summer Youth Olympics. In September 2018, the International Olympic Committee agreed to award the 2022 Summer Youth Olympics to the city of Dakar in Senegal. [1]

Dakar were officially awarded the Games at the 133rd IOC Session in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on 8 October 2018.

The IOC voted to select the host city of the 2022 Summer Youth Olympics on 8 October 2018 at the 133rd IOC Session in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

On 6 February 2018, Senegal declared its interest to host these games. Senegal's Olympic and Sport Committee President Mamadou Ndiaye said that “we have recently renovated or built a lot of sports facilities and infrastructure.” [4]

On 7 September 2018, the IOC's executive board announced that Dakar's bid would be the only bid that would advance to the October vote, effectively making Dakar the host of the 2022 Summer Youth Olympics. [5] President Thomas Bach announced that the IOC was interested in bringing the Summer Youth Olympics to Dakar.

After hosting the 2014 African Youth Games in the capital and largest city of Botswana, the country's National Olympic Committee had in mind to bid for other competitions such as the African Championships in Athletics, African Swimming Championships and the 2023 Summer Youth Olympics. [6] Lassana Palenfo, president of ANOCA, had suggested a joint-African bid that includes South Africa, Botswana and Angola. [7] In February, 2018 IOC President Thomas Bach stated that the Executive Board "wants the Summer Youth Olympic Games 2022 to take place in Africa" and that it has been decided to propose African continent a strong priority for the host. [8]

Previously interested in bidding

The following cities initially explored the possibility of bidding but decided not to proceed to the preparation stage.

Americas

In April 2016 the Monterrey City Olympic Foundation announced that the Mexican city will not be bidding for the 2023 Youth Olympic Games as had been originally planned. Monterrey bid for the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics and 2018 but both times the Mexican Olympic Committee chose Guadalajara as a candidate. [9]

Asia

In 2015 Pang Chung, former secretary general of the Hong Kong Sports Federation & Olympic Committee (SF&OC) who is still an adviser to the body, stated that the 2023 Youth Olympics would be perfect for Hong Kong. He said that the 2009 East Asian Games showed the city can stage successful games and added: "If China wins the hosting rights for the 2022 Winter Olympics, we can also strengthen the impact of sport in the region by hosting the Youth Olympics the following year". Hong Kong has bid for the 2006 Asian Games and failed to become a candidate for the 2022 Asian Games after lawmakers voted it down in 2010. [10] The city will also hosted the 2022 Gay Games, after previously hosted the 2019 Asian Deaf Games, which later cancelled due to many protests.

Europe

Preliminary talks over potentially hosting the YOG between IOC members and officials from the city took place at the 131st IOC Session. Budapest bid to host the 2024 Summer Olympics but withdrew on March 1, 2017. [11]

Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov supported the proposal to hold the Youth Olympic Games in 2023 in Kazan. The meeting of the State Duma on physical culture, sports, tourism and youth affairs took place in the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, [12] also held the 2013 Summer Universiade.

Die Linke party along with the Ecological Democratic Party (ODP) in Germany wrote a letter to Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter in February 2016 urging to investigate a possible bid for the Youth Olympic Games. [13] Munich hosted the 1972 Summer Olympics.

The Board of Aldermen of Rotterdam planned to do a feasibility study to see if the city would bid for the 2023 Youth Olympic Games. André Bolhuis, President of the Netherlands Olympic Committee said, "we are pleased to have such an enthusiastic partner for this beautiful event as Rotterdam." Rotterdam bid for the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics but failed to become a candidate. [14]

Those cities were Chicago, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo; the decisions were made during a meeting in Athens, Greece. The remaining Applicant cities—Baku, Doha and Prague—were eliminated.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Youth Olympic Games</span> International multi-sport event

The Youth Olympic Games (YOG) is an international multi-sport event for athletes between 15 and 18 years old, organized by the International Olympic Committee. The games are held every four years in staggered summer and winter events consistent with the current Olympic Games format, though in reverse order with the Olympic Winter Games held in leap years instead of the Games of the Olympiad. The first summer version was held in Singapore from 14 to 26 August 2010 while the first winter version was held in Innsbruck, Austria from 13 to 22 January 2012.

The Youth Olympics are a multi-sport event organized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) every two years, alternating between Summer Youth Olympics and Winter Youth Olympics. Selection of the host city is done by postal voting by the members of the IOC four to five years prior to the tournament, in which the IOC members vote between candidate cities which have submitted bids. Bids for the first four games have been made by 15 cities in 14 countries.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Bids for the 2022 Winter Olympics</span>

A total of six bids were initially submitted for the 2022 Winter Olympics. Four of the bids were subsequently withdrawn by 1 October 2014, citing either the high costs of hosting the Games or the lack of local support, leaving Almaty, Kazakhstan and Beijing, China as the only two remaining candidate cities. Beijing was then elected as the host city at the 128th IOC Session in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on 31 July 2015.

Guadalajara 2018 was a bid by the city of Guadalajara and the Comité Olímpico Mexicano to host the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Bids for the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics</span>

The bidding for the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics Games began on 2 February 2009, with cities presented their candidature files. In the competition to host the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in 2014, the IOC list three cities in December 2009. Guadalajara officially withdrew the bid on 22 January 2010, two weeks after the release of the IOC evaluation commission's report and less than three weeks before the final vote in Vancouver.

Six bids were made for the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics. The IOC selected three of the bids as candidate cities. On July 4, 2013, Buenos Aires was elected as host city.

A total of seven bids were initially submitted for the 2026 Winter Olympics. Four of the bids were subsequently withdrawn after entering the candidature stage, leaving Milan–Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy and Stockholm–Åre, Sweden as the only two remaining candidate bids. Milan–Cortina d'Ampezzo was elected as the host city at the 134th IOC Session in Lausanne, Switzerland, on 24 June 2019.

Five bids were initially submitted for the 2024 Summer Olympics. Following withdrawals, two bidding cities—Paris and Los Angeles—were left in the process. In July 2017, the IOC agreed to award the 2024 and 2028 Games simultaneously. Los Angeles agreed to bid for the 2028 Games, effectively ceding the 2024 Games to Paris.

The 133rd IOC Session was an IOC Session held in Buenos Aires, Argentina on 8 October 2018, during the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics. This was the second IOC Session held in Buenos Aires after the 125th IOC Session. The Candidature Phase for 2026 Winter Olympics was opened and the host of the 2022 Summer Youth Olympics for of its kind Olympics in Africa for the first time ever: Dakar, Senegal was announced at this IOC Session.

Originally scheduled to be held for 18 days in Dakar, Senegal, from 22 October to 9 November 2022, it is now scheduled to be held there for 13 days—from 31 October to 13 November 2026, becoming the first IOC event to be held in Africa.

The selection of the host for the 2032 Summer Olympics saw a new process being introduced from 2019. The bidding process saw Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, chosen as the preferred and expected host that was officially certified by the IOC on the eve of the 2020 Summer Olympics on 21 July 2021 in Tokyo, Japan.
