Biscogniauxia atropunctata, the hypoxylon canker, is a species [2] of sac fungus in the family Graphostromataceae. Like many other fungi in the genus, it is a plant pathogen; specifically this species can cause Biscogniauxia (Hypoxylon) canker and dieback disease in host trees. [3] [4]

Description

Patches of the fungus can reach a few metres across. It is white, sometimes with black patches, and usually with a black margin. [5]

Similar species

In addition to other species within the genus, Diatrype stigma , Camarops tubulina , Kretzschmaria deusta , and species of Camillea can appear similar, as can Arthonia lichens. [5]

Distribution

This species is found in spring and early summer east of the Rocky Mountains of North America. [6]

Ecology

When not pathogenic, Biscogniauxia atropunctata is saprobic on oak and other hardwood trees, causing a white rot on the host deadwood. The fruiting body grows in patches with a whitish-gray surface covered by black dots that grow to be blackened overall. [6]

The fungus can colonize healthy trees and live undetected and harmlessly in the bark and sapwood for some time, its spread kept in check by the host's natural defenses. However, when the trees become stressed, the fungus invades weakened host tissues, causing the dieback disease. Initially the infection kills affected branches, then progresses down the trunk to form a canker, girdling the tree and killing the entire crown. [4]

The symptoms of infection appear in the crowns of infected trees as discoloured foliage, reduced growth, dieback of the branches and death. The mushrooms are edible but some people may be intolerant to them. This species is capable of producing light via bioluminescence in its mycelium.

Thousand cankers disease (TCD) is a recently recognized disease of certain walnuts. The disease results from the combined activity of the walnut twig beetle and a canker producing fungus, Geosmithia morbida. Until July 2010 the disease was only known to the western United States where over the past decade it has been involved in several large scale die-offs of walnut, particularly black walnut, Juglans nigra. However, in late July 2010 a well-established outbreak of the disease was found in the Knoxville, Tennessee, area. This new finding is the first locating it within the native range of its susceptible host, black walnut. In 2013, an outbreak was found in the Veneto region of Italy, where the disease has been found on both black walnut and English walnut.

<i>Armillaria</i> root rot Fungal tree disease

Armillaria root rot is a fungal root rot caused by several different members of the genus Armillaria. The symptoms are variable depending on the host infected, ranging from stunted leaves to chlorotic needles and dieback of twigs and branches. However, all infected hosts display symptoms characteristic of being infected by a white rotting fungus. The most effective ways of management focus on limiting the spread of the fungus, planting resistant species, and removing infected material. This disease poses a threat to the lumber industry as well as affecting recreational areas.

Bot canker of oak is a disease on stems, branches and twigs of oak trees in Europe and North America. The casual agent of Bot canker of oak is the fungus Botryosphaeria corticola. Bot canker of oak causes lesions and cankers on a wide range of oaks in Europe and most recently live oaks in North America. Some infections were formerly attributed to Botryosphaeria stevensii, but most likely represent infections by Botryosphaeria corticola. Botryosphaeria corticola is distinguishable from Botryosphaeria stevensii via ITS rDNA sequencing.

<i>Entoleuca mammata</i> Species of fungus

Entoleuca mammata is a species of fungus in the genus Entoleuca. It is responsible for the plant disease hypoxylon canker in hardwood trees such as quaking aspen and other aspens and poplars, Salix myrsinifolia and other willow species, rowan, Sitka alder, birch, apple, oak, and hop-hornbeam.

The foamy bark canker is a disease affecting oak trees in California caused by the fungus Geosmithia sp. #41 and spread by the Western oak bark beetle. This disease is only seen through the symbiosis of the bark beetles and the fungal pathogen. The bark beetles target oak trees and bore holes through the peridermal tissues, making tunnels within the phloem. The fungal spores are brought into these tunnels by the beetles and begin to colonize the damaged cells inside the tunnels. Symptoms of the developing fungus include wet discoloration seeping from the beetle entry holes as the fungus begins to consume phloem and likely other tissues. If bark is removed, necrosis of the phloem can be observed surrounding the entry hole(s). As the disease progresses, a reddish sap and foamy liquid oozes from entry holes, thus giving the disease the name foamy bark canker. Eventually, after the disease has progressed, the tree dies. This disease is important because of its detrimental effects on oak trees and its ability to spread to several new Californian counties in just a couple of years.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Hypoxylon canker of shade trees</span> Tree disease

Hypoxylon canker of shade trees is a weak ascomycete fungus that negatively affects growth and can eventually lead to the death of weak or diseased host trees. There are many different species that affect different trees. For example, Hypoxylon atropunctatum, a common species, is found on oak trees, Hypoxylon tinctor affects sycamore trees, and Hypoxylon mammatum infests aspen trees.

<i>Aleurodiscus oakesii</i> Species of fungus

Aleurodiscus oakesii is a cluster of small, gray-white, irregular cup-shaped saprotrophic fungi that grows on decaying hardwood tree bark. This fungus may also be called hophornbeam discs, and it causes smooth patch disease. A. oakesii is found year round in North America, Europe, and Asia and is commonly found on oak trees.
