Brazilians in the Philippines form the country's 10th-largest group of foreign residents, according to the 2000 Philippines census. [1]

Business and employment

Since 2004, there has been a wave of Brazilian models coming to the Philippines for work. [2] [3] Many of these models are of Japanese heritage. [4] They look somewhat like Filipinos but with more "chiseled features", which has been an advantage to them in finding jobs in the Philippines. Brazilians are attracted to the modelling industry in the Philippines because, unlike other countries in the region such as Thailand and China, English is widely spoken. [5] Photographers feel that Brazilian models are less inhibited than their Filipino counterparts, and reject accusations that race or ethnicity has anything to do with their hiring decisions. [2] However, in many cases the models speak only Portuguese, and have limited educational background. [6]

Brazilian models have been criticised by their domestic competitors for working at low fees, as little as P1,500 for a gig in comparison to typical local rates of P5,000 to P10,000 per show. The Professional Models Association of the Philippines has particularly been critical of the influx of Brazilian models. [2] However, Brazilian actors themselves respond that there are many overseas Filipino workers in different countries around the globe including Brazil, and they have no desire to displace local talent. [7] Models have to get permits from the Bureau of Immigration, and renew them every two months. In a few cases, BI officers have raided fashion shows and arrested models who were working illegally. [5] However the PMAP claims that when they reported illegal models to the BI, the BI responded that they had bigger issues to deal with, and declined to follow up on the reports. [2] Actor Lemuel Palayo made public complaints about Brazilian models, but then later retracted them and apologised. [8] [9] In November 2010, Phoemela Baranda also made public statements that the Philippines needed better laws to protect models against competition from Brazilians, and suggested imposing taxes on the employment of foreign models. [10] However, other Filipino actors such as Wendell Ramos, Paolo Contis, JC Tiuseco, Aljur Abrenica, and Mark Herras have stated that they are not concerned by the increased competition. [11]

Culture and organizations

There are some Brazilian missionaries in the Philippines. [12] [13] The Brazilian Christian social action organization Pastoral da Criança has an outreach and food distribution program in Daet, Camarines Norte. The Conselho de Representantes de Brasileiros no Exterior, a Brazilian diaspora organization, has had a representative-candidate from the Philippines since 2010: Fabiana Mesquita, a native of Santos, São Paulo, whose husband's work with the World Health Organization brought him to the Philippines. She has participated in Brazilian social initiatives in the Philippines, and has also promoted the teaching of Portuguese to Brazilian children abroad. [14]

Another example of Brazilian cultural influence in the Philippines is the Brasilipinas annual celebration. It began in 2007 as a sort of mini-Brazilian Carnival in Metro Manila, organised by a local capoeira school, but has also been held around Christmas time as well. [15] [16] The most recent celebration was in 2011. It is typically held at Rockwell Center in Makati. [17]

Koreans in the Philippines, largely consisting of expatriates from South Korea and people born in the Philippines with Korean ancestry, form the second largest Korean diaspora community in Southeast Asia and the 14th-largest in the world, after Koreans in Kazakhstan and after Koreans in Vietnam. As of 2013, statistics of South Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade recorded their population at 88,102 people, a fall of 31% since 2009 after a period of rapid growth in the population in the preceding decade.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Oblation Run</span> Nude fraternity protest event in Philippines

The Oblation Run is an annual event held by the University of the Philippines (UP) and Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) chapters of Alpha Phi Omega (APO) on the PUP and different UP campuses. The runners are male, and traditionally run completely naked in public places, with their genitals fully visible, on a designated route. The event was first organized in 1977 at the University of the Philippines Diliman to promote Hubad na Bayani, a film. It draws its name from the Oblation, a statue of a nude man located in every University of the Philippines campus, which symbolizes "a selfless offering of one's self to the country." The event is usually done on December 16, and serves as a protest to contemporary national issues.

Brother Armin Altamirano Luistro, FSC is a Filipino Lasallian Brother who served as secretary of the Department of Education of the Philippines under President Benigno Aquino III. Luistro entered De La Salle Scholasticate in Manila on April 1979 while he was studying in De La Salle University (DLSU). He received the religious habit of the congregation on October 1981 at the La Salle Novitiate in Lipa. He professed his first religious vows on October 1982, and his final vows on May 1988.

Fifty contestants competed for the title. The event was broadcast by ABS-CBN in the Philippines and by The Filipino Channel internationally.

The 35th Metro Manila Film Festival–Philippines was held from December 25, 2009 to January 7, 2010. During this period, no other films are allowed to be screened in Philippine theaters.

There is a community of Iranians in the Philippines, including many international students drawn by the country's low-cost English education. According to the figures of the 2000 Philippines census, they were the 11th-largest group of immigrants and expats.

Diehard Duterte Supporters (DDS) is a name adopted by political extremists who support the 16th president of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte, whom they defend as a necessary strongman, to refer to themselves. The term was popularized during the 2016 presidential elections and has since been used to refer to the most unquestioning among Duterte's loyalists, who wear it as a badge of honor and pride. The term commonly refers to a group of people engaging in internet trolling and disruptive behaviour online to defend Duterte.
