Burundi competed at the 2019 African Games held from 19 to 31 August 2019 in Rabat, Morocco.
Onesphore Nzikwinkunda finished in 6th place in the men's 10,000 metres event. [1]
Rodrique Kwizera competed in the men's 5000 metres and he finished in 16th place. [2] Cavaline Nahimana competed in the women's 5000 metres event and she finished in 8th place. [3]
Patrick Nibafasha competed in the men's 1500 metres but did not qualify to compete in the final. [4] Violette Ndayikengurukiye competed in the women's 800 metres event and also did not qualify to compete in the final.
Two athletes represented Burundi in the men's 800 metres: Eric Nzikwinkunda and Prosper Niyonkuru. Niyonkuru did not advance to the semifinals and Nzikwinkunda finished in 11th place in the semifinals.
Leonidas Ahishakiye, Mussa Amissi and Amadi Uwimana competed in road cycling. [5]
Burundi's national under-20 football team competed at the 2019 African Games. [6] [7] The team lost all three matches in the men's tournament and did not advance to the semi-finals.
Six athletes represented Burundi in judo: Claude Hakizimana, Signoline Kanyamuneza, Samuel Kwitonda, Fabrice Kwizera, Donatien Nduwimana and Ange Ciella Niragira.
Elvis Terimbere (men's Kumite -60kg) competed in karate. [8]
Belly Crésus Ganira, Billy Scott Irakoze and Odrina Kaze competed in swimming.
Burundi competed in tennis.
Claude Ndayizeye and Rachelle Niyomukiza were scheduled to compete in wrestling but they did not compete in their events.
Vénuste Niyongabo is a Burundian former long and middle-distance runner. In 1996, he became the first Olympic medalist from Burundi by winning the 5000 metres at the 1996 Summer Olympics. He had only competed twice before in that event prior to winning the gold medal.
Burundi participated in the 2008 Summer Olympics, held in Beijing, China from 8 to 24 August 2008. It was Burundi's fourth appearance in the summer Olympics since its debut in 1996. The Burundi team included three athletes: runners Joachim Nshimirimana and Francine Niyonizigiye, as well as swimmer Elsie Uwamahoro. Niyonizigiye, a marathon runner, was flag bearer for the opening ceremony. None of the Burundi athletes progressed further than the qualifying round.
