Eveline Sanches competed in both the women's 100 metres and the women's 200 metres events. [2] In both events she did not advance to the semifinals. [2]
Carla Mendes competed in the women's 800 metres event. [3] She was also scheduled to compete in the women's 1500 metres event but she did not start. [3]
Jordin Andrade competed in the men's 400 metres hurdles. He did not advance to compete in the final.
Samuel Freire competed in the men's 5000 metres event. He finished in 19th place. He also competed in the men's 10,000 metres. He did not finish in that event.
Ruben Sança competed in the men's half marathon and he finished in 16th place.
Cape Verde was scheduled to compete in beach volleyball but did not compete.
Albertino Miguel Monteiro, Davilson Morais, Ivanusa Moreira, Sergio Antonio Rodrigues, Gelson Rodnex Semedo, Wilson Carlos Semedo and Carlos Antonio Silva were scheduled to compete in boxing.

Cape Verde's national volleyball team qualified to compete at the 2019 African Games. [10] They lost all five games in the men's tournament. [11]
Cape Verde competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics which were held in London, United Kingdom from 27 July to 12 August 2012. The country's participation at London marked its fifth appearance in the Summer Olympics since its debut in 1996. The delegation included Ruben Sança, a long-distance runner; Lidiane Lopes, a sprinter; and Adysângela Moniz, a judoka. Moniz and Sança were also selected as the flag bearers for the opening and closing ceremonies respectively. Of the three Cape Verdean athletes, only Moniz progressed further than the first round.
Cape Verde competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 5 to 21 August 2016. The nation's participation in Rio de Janeiro marked its sixth appearance at the Summer Olympics since its debut in 1996.
Cape Verde sent a delegation to compete at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 7 to 18 September 2016. This was the nations' fourth appearance at a Summer Paralympic Games since it made its debut at the 2004 Athens Summer Paralympics. Cape Verde was represented by two athletes in Rio de Janeiro: sprinter Gracelino Barbosa and javelin thrower Márcio Fernandes, who qualified for the Games by meeting the qualification standards of their events. Barbosa won the country's first Paralympic medal with his third-place finish in the men's 400 metres T20 competition and Fernandes came ninth in the F44 men's javelin event.

It was also the first time since the 1978 All-Africa Games that Morocco took part in the competition after being banned.
