Somalia competed at the 2019 African Games [1] [2] held from 19 to 31 August 2019 in Rabat, Morocco. [1] [3] In total, athletes representing Somalia competed in three sports and did not win any medals.

Athletics

Somalia had two male competitors compete in athletics; Abdirashid Yusuf Ali who competed in the men's 800 metres and Abdullahi Jama Mohamed who participated in the men's 1500 metres. [4] [5]

Abdirashid Yusuf Ali did not qualify to compete in the semifinals and Abdullahi Jama Mohamed finished in 9th place in the final. [5]

Boxing

Four men [note 1] and one women, Ramla Said Ahmed Ali, represented Somalia in the Boxing events at the games. On Ahmed Ali competed in the Women's featherweight event. [6] On 24 August, she lost her match against Marcelat Sakobi Matshu of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. [7]

Taekwondo

Somalia had three women [note 2] and one man, Abdulahi Faud Dahir, participate in Taekwondo at the games in 2019. [8]

Somali Salvation Democratic Front Somali organization

Somali Salvation Democratic Front (SSDF), initially known as the Democratic Front for Salvation of Somalia, was a political and paramilitary umbrella organization in Somalia. Founded in 1978 by several army officers, it was the first of several opposition groups dedicated to ousting the authoritarian regime of Mohamed Siad Barre. With its power base mainly in the Majeerteen clan, SSDF representatives, along with local elders, intellectuals and business people, were instrumental in the establishment in 1998 of the autonomous Puntland region in northeastern Somalia.

Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed Somali politician

Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed was a Somali politician and former Colonel in the Somali National Army. He was one of the founders of the Somali Salvation Democratic Front, as well as the Puntland State of Somalia, where he served as the autonomous region's first President. In 2004, Ahmed also helped establish the Transitional Federal Government, which he led as President of Somalia from 2004 until 2008

The Majeerteen is a Somali clan. It is one of the major Somali clans, with a vast traditional territory spanning 3 major regions of Somalia: Bari, Nugaal and Mudug. From Bosaso down to Garacad, the Majerteen settle in what is literally considered to be the 'Horn of Africa'. They can also be found in Kismayo in southern Somalia. Its members form a part of the Darod clan family, and primarily inhabit the Puntland state of northeastern Somalia.

The Dhulbahante is a Somali clan family, part of the Harti clan which itself belongs to the largest Somali clan-family — the Darod. In Somaliland, the Dhulbahante primarily settle in the regions of Sool, Sanaag, and Togdheer whilst they have a significant presences in Jubbaland, Somalia, particularly in the city of Kismayo. In Ethiopia, they settle in the Dollo Zone specifically in the woredas of Boh, Danot and Werder.

Darod Somali clan

The Darod is a Somali clan. The forefather of this clan was Sheikh Abdirahman bin Isma'il al-Jabarti, more commonly known as Darood. In Somalia members of the clan settle in the Federal Member States of Jubbaland and Puntland. Furthermore, the clan has an ancillary presence in pockets of the states of Koonfur-Galbeed and Galmudug. In Somaliland the clan settle the eastern regions of Sool and Sanaag. In Ethiopia the clan settles in the Somali State region, whilst in Kenya they settle in the North Eastern Province.

Harti Sub-clan of the Somali Darod clan

Harti, meaning "strong man", is a name used to denote a confederation of various Darod sub-clans of the Somali people. The major subclans of the Harti are the Dhulbahante, Majeerteen, Warsangali and Dishiishe, other minor Harti sub-clans are the Kaskiqabe, Geesaguule and Liibaangashe.

Somali Youth League

The Somali Youth League (SYL), initially known as the Somali Youth Club (SYC), was the first political party in Somalia. It played a key role in the nation's road to independence during the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s.

Supreme Revolutionary Council (Somalia)

The Supreme Revolutionary Council (SRC) was the governmental body that ruled Somalia from 1969 to 1976.

Sports in Somalia

Sports in Somalia are regulated by the Ministry of Sports of Somalia. The government ministry works closely with the Somali Olympic Committee and various sports governing bodies, including the Somali Football Federation. Abdi Bile from Las Anod is Somalia's most decorated athlete in history; Abdi Bile also holds the highest number of Somali national records. The longest continuously serving national team captains of Somalia's two most popular sports, basketball and football, are Yusuf Qaafow and Hasan Babay respectively.

Ministry of Finance (Somalia)

The Ministry of Finance, abbreviated MOF, is a ministry of the Government of Somalia that is charged with the responsibility for government expenditure and revenue raising. The ministry's role is to develop economic policy and prepare the federal budget. The Ministry of Finance also oversees financial legislation and regulation. Each year in October, the Minister of Finance presents the Somali federal budget to the Parliament.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Somalia)

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Somalia is the Somali government ministry which oversees the foreign relations of Somalia. The current minister is Mohamed Abdirizak.

Egypt at the 2019 African Games Sporting event delegation

Egypt competed at the 2019 African Games held from 19 to 31 August 2019 in Rabat, Morocco. In total 297 athletes were expected to represent Egypt at the games. This later increased to 330 athletes. Athletes representing the country won 102 gold medals, 98 silver medals and 73 bronze medals and the country finished 1st in the medal table.

Uganda at the 2019 African Games Sporting event delegation

Uganda competed at the 2019 African Games held from 19 to 31 August 2019 in Rabat, Morocco. Initially 77 athletes were scheduled to represent Uganda. This later rose to 78 athletes. Athletes representing Uganda won two silver medals and eight bronze medals and the country finished in 28th place in the medal table.

Djibouti competed at the 2019 African Games held from 19 to 31 August 2019 in Rabat, Morocco. In total, athletes representing Djibouti won one silver medal and one bronze medal and the country finished in 33rd place in the medal table.

Somaliland Declaration of Independence

The Somaliland Declaration of Independence was proclaimed on 18 May 1991 by Somali Sultans from the Isaaq, Dhulbahante, Issa, Gadabursi, Warsangali clans and Somali National Movement. Chairman of the SNM, and soon to be first President of Somaliland which came from the independence it gained on 26 June 1960 United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
