Craig James Allen (born February 14, 1995) is an American track and field athlete who competes in the 400 meters hurdles. He is the US men's national record holder over 400m hurdles indoors. [1]
From Belfair, Washington, Allen attended North Mason High School. [2]
In 2017, Allen ran 49.44 seconds in the event for Washington State University in the NCAA 400-meter hurdle heats but finished ninth and missed the final of the NCAA by one spot. In 2022, he ran personal-best time of 48.17s at the 2022 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, but finished fourth in the USA final, and missed earning a place on the United States' World Athletics Championships team in Eugene by one spot. In January 2023, Allen broke the American national record for the 400m hurdles indoors. He ran 48.88 seconds at the American Track League Pro Puma Classic meet held at the University of Iowa. He beat the 49.78 seconds set by Reuben McCoy in 2011, and was a one-hundredth of a second (.01) from the world record of 48.78, set in 2012 by Felix Sanchez of the Dominican Republic. [4]
Allen won the 400m hurdles in 47.92 seconds at the Meeting de Paris at Stade Charlety, Friday, June 9, 2023, in Paris. [5] [6] Allen set a new personal best time for the 400m hurdles competing at the Oslo Diamond League meeting in 2023. [7]
Competing at the 2023 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, in Eugene, Oregon, he finished second in the 400m hurdles finals behind Rai Benjamin, [8] qualifying for the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest in August 2023. [9] In Budapest, he reached the semi finals. [10]
In May 2024, he finished runner-up in the 400 metres hurdles at the 2024 Doha Diamond League. [11] He followed that up with a third place at the 2024 Prefontaine Classic, [12] and third place at the 2024 BAUHAUS-galan Diamond League event in Stockholm. [13] In June 2024, he finished second in the 400 metres hurdles at the US Olympic trials. [14] He competed at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris in August 2024, in the 400 metres hurdles, reaching the semi-finals. [15]
The 400 metres hurdles is a track and field hurdling event. The event has been on the Olympic athletics programme since 1900 for men and since 1984 for women.
Angelo F. Taylor is an American track and field athlete, winner of 400-meter hurdles at the 2000 and 2008 Summer Olympics. His personal record for the hurdles event is 47.25 seconds. His time puts him in a tie with Félix Sánchez for the #14 performer of all time. Sánchez also won two Olympic gold medals, in 2004 between Taylor's two golds and 2012, immediately following. Taylor also has a 400-meter dash best of 44.05 seconds, ranking him as the joint 29th performer of all time, superior to any other athlete who has made a serious effort in the 400 metres hurdles. He won the bronze medal in the 400 m at the 2007 World Championships in Athletics.
Kerron Stephon Clement is a Trinidadian-born American track and field athlete who competes in the 400-meter hurdles and 400-meter sprint. He held the indoor world record in the 400-meter sprint, having broken Michael Johnson's mark in 2005.
Karsten Warholm is a Norwegian sprinter who competes in the 400 metres and 400 m hurdles. He is the 2020 Tokyo Olympic champion, silver medalist at the 2024 Paris Olympics, three-time world champion and world record holder in the latter event.
Dalilah Muhammad is an American track and field athlete who specializes in the 400 meters hurdles. She is the 2016 Rio Olympics champion and 2020 Tokyo Olympics silver medalist, becoming at the latter the then-second-fastest woman of all time in the event with her personal best of 51.58 seconds. Muhammad was second at both the 2013 and 2017 World Championships to take her first gold in 2019, setting the former world record of 52.16 s. She was the second female 400 m hurdler in history, after Sally Gunnell, to have won the Olympic, World titles and broken the world record. At both the 2019 World Championships and Tokyo Games, she also took gold as part of women's 4 × 400 metres relay team.
Matthew Hudson-Smith is a British track and field sprinter who specialises in the 400 metres. He holds, as of August 2024, the British and European record, running a personal best of 43.44 seconds for the distance at the 2024 Summer Olympics. He was the 2018 European Champion in 400 metres, and a member of the gold-winning teams in the 4 x 400 metre relay at the 2014 European Athletics Championships, with Great Britain and 2014 Commonwealth Games with England.
Michael Arthur Norman Jr. is an American sprinter. He previously held the world best time in the indoor 400 meters at 44.52 seconds. Outdoors, his 43.45, set at the 2019 Mt. SAC Relays, is tied on sixth on the all time list. In 2016, he became the world junior champion in both the 200 meters and 4×100 meter relay. In 2022, he became the world champion in both the 400 meters and 4x400 meter relay.
Sydney Michelle McLaughlin-Levrone is an American hurdler and sprinter who competes in the 400 meters hurdles and is the world record holder in that event. She has won gold in the 2020 and 2024 Summer Olympics, as well as the 2022 World Athletics Championships. She set a world record time of 50.37 seconds at the 2024 Summer Olympics on August 8, 2024, breaking her own old world record of 50.65 seconds. She is the first track athlete to break four world records in the same event; setting four world records during 13 months, she was the first woman to break the 52-second and 51-second barriers in the 400 m hurdles. She won the silver medal at the 2019 World Championships. At all four competitions, she also took gold as part of a women's 4 × 400 m relay team.
Noah Lyles is an American professional track and field sprinter who competes in the 60 meters, 100 meters and 200 meters. His personal best of 19.31 seconds in the 200 m is the American record, and makes him the third fastest of all-time in the event. He is a one-time Olympic champion and six-time world champion.
Fredrick Lee Kerley is an American track and field sprinter. He was the Olympic silver medalist over 100 m at the 2020 Olympics and bronze medalist at the 2024 Olympics in the same event. Kerley has earned an additional six medals at the World Championships, most notably 100m gold at the 2022 edition. He has also medalled in the 400m, 4 x 100m relay, and 4 × 400 m relay and won eleven Diamond League races, including two Diamond League finals - the 400m in 2018 and the 100m in 2021.
Rai Benjamin is an American hurdler and sprinter specializing in the 400 m and 400 m hurdles. He is the second fastest man in history in the 400 m hurdles with a personal best time of 46.17 s. He won a silver medal at his first Olympic Games in 2021 and won the 400 m hurdles race at the 2024 Summer Olympics. Benjamin also won silver medals and at the World Championships in 2019 and 2022 in the men's 400 m hurdles, and gold medals in the 4 × 400 m relay in 2019 and 2021.
Alison Brendom Alves dos Santos is a Brazilian athlete specialising in the 400 metres hurdles. He is a bronze medalist from the 2020 and 2024 Summer Olympics, the 2022 World Champion and the third fastest athlete in the history of the event, in addition to being a gold medalist in the 2019 Pan American Games. Dos Santos is currently the South American and Pan American record holder in the competition.
Femke Bol is a Dutch track and field athlete who competes in hurdling and sprinting. She specialises in the 400 metres hurdles, where she is the 2023 World Champion, and in the 400 metres, where she is the 2024 World Indoor Champion and the short track world record holder. In the 4 × 400 metres relay, she is the 2023 World Champion and the 2024 World Indoor Champion with the Dutch women's team and the 2024 Olympic Champion with the Dutch mixed team.
