The Calgary International Reggae Festival is an annual event in Calgary, Alberta, Canada that is organized by the Calgary Reggae Festival Society.

Contents

Featuring a mixture of local and international reggae acts, the festival has taken place every year since 2004. [1] Starting as a one-day event, by 2008 it had expanded to a ten-day festival. [1] The festival was co-founded by Leo Cripps, the host of CJSW-FM's Caribbean Link-Up show, and from an early stage it was sponsored by radio station Vibe 98.5. [2]

The 2014 event was headlined by Third World. [3]

This festival went on hiatus in 2020 & will return in 2021.

Big Mountain is an American band known for its remake of Peter Frampton's "Baby, I Love Your Way", which became a top 10 hit single in the US in early 1994, reaching No. 6 on the US Billboard Hot 100, No. 1 on the Mainstream Top 40 and No. 2 in the UK.

Stop Murder Music is a campaign to oppose Caribbean artists that produce music with lyrics alleged to glorify murder of homosexual men. The campaign was mainly against Jamaican musicians, primarily dancehall and reggae artists such as Buju Banton, Bounty Killer, and the Bobo Ashanti Rastafarians Sizzla and Capleton.

Millennium Park (Calgary)

Millennium Park also known as Shaw Millennium Park is a skatepark in Calgary, Alberta on the western end of downtown Calgary, on the site of the former Mewata Stadium adjacent to Mewata Armouries.

Reggae is a music genre that originated in Jamaica in the late 1960s. Australia has several bands and sound systems that play reggae music in a style faithful to its expression in Jamaica. Australia has a relatively small Jamaican community, but reggae penetrated local consciousness via the popularity of reggae among the non-Jamaican population of England in the 1960s and 1970s. Canada Olympic Park bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton track

The Canada Olympic Park bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton track is a bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton track located in Calgary, Alberta. Part of Canada Olympic Park, it hosted the bobsleigh and luge competitions at the 1988 Winter Olympics. This track is one of only two of its type in the world to be featured in a non-documentary film when it was part of the 1993 American film Cool Runnings which loosely followed the Jamaican Bobsled Team during their competition in bobsleigh at the 1988 Games.

Tessanne Chin Jamaican reggae fusion recording artist

Tessanne Amanda Chin is a Jamaican recording artist, best known for winning Season 5 of NBC's reality TV singing competition The Voice as part of Adam Levine's team. She has opened for famous acts such as Patti Labelle, Peabo Bryson and Gladys Knight, and toured for three years with Jimmy Cliff. She is the younger sister of singer Tami Chynn.

Rebel Salute

Rebel Salute is an annual music festival held in Jamaica. It is held on January 15 of every year, the birthday of promoter Tony Rebel. It is one of Jamaica's biggest music festivals, known for its focus on roots and conscious music. Rebel began the festival in 1994 in the parish of Manchester and was long held annually in St. Elizabeth on the country's south coast until 2012. As of 2014, the festival is now a two-day event, held in the Richmond Park Estate in Saint Ann Parish.

Carlene Davis is a Jamaican gospel and reggae singer active since the 1970s. Successful since the early 1980s as a reggae artist, she survived cancer in the mid-1990s, after which she dedicated her career to gospel music. She has released over ten albums.

Lieutenant Stitchie

Cleveland Laing, better known as Lieutenant Stitchie, is a Jamaican deejay who originally worked in the dancehall style but switched to gospel reggae in 1997 after surviving a car crash, thereafter working under the shorter name Stitchie.

The Fabulous Five Inc. is a reggae and soca band formed in Jamaica in the late 1960s. Over a 45-year career, they have released 26 albums, had many number 1 hits in Jamaica, and were the featured musicians on Johnny Nash's platinum album I Can See Clearly Now.

9 Mile Music Festival

The 9 Mile Music Festival, also known as the Bob Marley Festival, Bob Fest, Marley Fest and Caribbean Festival, is an annual music event which began in 1993 in Miami. 9 Mile was pioneered by Bob Marley's mother, Cedella Marley Booker, to pay tribute to the legacy of her late son, and his messages of peace, love and unity. The festival maintains a tradition of collecting canned goods upon admission, to continue efforts to give back to the community. Donations go towards feeding the less fortunate in South Florida and the Caribbean. Over 2 million cans have been donated over the years.

Mikey Dangerous is a Jamaican/Canadian reggae artist. Dangerous was presented with a Juno Award for best Reggae Recording by the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences for his single "Don’t Go Pretending".
