The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, previously the chief of staff, is the office for the head of the Jordanian Armed Forces held by a Lieutenant general or higher ranking officer. [1]
The Jordan Armed Forces, also referred to as the Arab Army, are the military forces of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. They consist of the ground forces, air force, and navy and is under the direct control of the King of Jordan who is the Supreme Commander of the Jordan Armed Forces. The current Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is Major General Yousef Huneiti, who is also the King's military adviser.
Lieutenant general, lieutenant-general and similar is a three-star military rank used in many countries. The rank traces its origins to the Middle Ages, where the title of lieutenant general was held by the second in command on the battlefield, who was normally subordinate to a captain general.

The Arabization of the Jordanian Army command saw the dismissal of senior British officers commanding the Arab Legion by King Hussein and the subsequent renaming of the Legion into the Jordanian Armed Forces on 1 March 1956. Hussein's intentions to Arabize the Army command were to replace British officers with Jordanian officers, assert political independence from Britain, and improve relations with neighboring Arab states that viewed the British with suspicion.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) is a body of senior uniformed leaders in the United States Department of Defense which advises the president of the United States, the secretary of defense, the Homeland Security Council and the National Security Council on military matters. The composition of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is defined by statute and consists of the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (CJCS), vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (VCJCS), the military service chiefs from the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, and Air Force, and the chief of the National Guard Bureau, all appointed by the president following Senate confirmation. The Royal Jordanian Army is part of the Jordanian Armed Forces (JAF). It draws its origins from units such as the Arab Legion, formed in the British Mandate of Transjordan in the 1920s. It has seen combat against Israel in 1948, 1956, 1967, and 1973. The Army also fought the Syrians and the PLO during Black September in 1970.

Unlike the United States' counterpart which is primarily advisory, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff has actual operational control over all military personnel of South Korea's armed forces. The National Command Authority runs from the President and the Minister of National Defense to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and then to Operational Commands of the service branches, bypassing the Headquarters of each service branch. Currently there are five Operational Commands in the Army, two in the Navy and one in the Air Force.

Mashal Mohammad Al-Zaben was the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Jordanian Armed Forces between 23 February 2010 and 2 October 2016. On 22 May 2012 Al-Zaben was promoted to General, and received the Istiqlal Medal of the First Order.
Lieutenant General Mahmoud Freihat was Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Jordanian Armed Forces. Freihat was appointed to this position on 2 October 2016 and served until 24 July 2019.
