The Chile national rugby league team represents Chile in rugby league. The team is operated by Futbol a 13 Chile and sanctioned by the Rugby League International Federation to represent Chile at international level in the sport of rugby league.

History

Rugby league (known locally as Futbol a 13) was introduced to Chile in 2015 when the Futbol a 13 Chile organization was formed. Working in partnership with Latin Heat Rugby League, an Australian-based expat team representing Chile competed in the Cabramatta International Nines, marking the first time a Chilean team participated in an organized rugby league competition. The first domestic match in Chile was played in October 2016 in Negrete, which was followed by the announcement of the inaugural Chilean domestic competition. [3] The competition was expanded with the Super Liga 13 Chile launching in 2017. [4]

In November 2016, Chile competed in the inaugural international rugby league competition in South America, hosted in Miramar, Argentina, comprising Chile, Argentina and a number of select sides from around the region which were supported by the Latin Heat organization. [5] The competition culminated in Argentina and Chile taking part in their first official international match, which Argentina won 16–0. [6]

In November 2017, Los Ángeles, Chile, hosted the inaugural Latin American Rugby League Championship, comprising the national teams of Chile, Argentina, Colombia and Brazil. [7] [8] Chile won the inaugural tournament, defeating Argentina 32–12 in the final. [9]

In November 2018 Chile participated in the 2018 Americas Rugby League Championship, which acted as the American qualifying competition for the 2021 Rugby League World Cup; as such they became the first South American nation to enter the competition. They were eliminated after losing 62–0 to the USA on November 13, 2018.

The Jaguares was an Argentine professional rugby union team based in Buenos Aires, Argentina. They were founded in 2015 and are the first Argentine team to play in SANZAAR's Super Rugby competition, participating from the 2016 Super Rugby season onwards. They were the runners up during the 2019 Super Rugby season, losing to the Crusaders 19–3 in the Super Rugby Final, played on 6 July 2019. They participated in Super Rugby until the end of the 2020 Super Rugby season, before they departed the competition having not been named in any of the regionalised formats for the 2021 Super Rugby season. With no competition in sight, players moved to different clubs in Europe and the national group disintegrated. The Jaguares disbanded permanently in December 2022 due to the expansion of Super Rugby Americas, dividing into two new teams, Dogos XV and Pampas XV.

The Brazil national rugby league team represents Brazil in the sport of rugby league. The nation made its international debut at the inaugural Latin American Rugby League Championship held in Los Ángeles, Chile in November 2017, losing to the hosts in their first international match. The team are currently ranked 22nd as of November 2019, in the IRL World Rankings.

The Americas Pacific Challenge (APC) is a rugby union tournament funded by World Rugby  that serves as a development competition for Americas and Pacific island nations. It provides a way to prepare players for participation with their senior national men's teams during international tests  and in the Rugby World Cup qualification cycle.

The 2018 South American Rugby League Championship will be held in São Paulo, Brazil and is going to be held on the 23rd to the 25th of November 2018. The tournament is the inaugural South American Championship. The teams participating in the tournament are Brazil, Argentina and Colombia. The South American Cup also includes a women's international between the Brazilian women's team and Argentinian women's team and a second division game between Brazil and Argentina, as well as an Under-17's match between Brazil and Argentina.

The Rugby League Pacific Championship is a rugby league tournament for national teams in Oceania. Its inaugural tournament was in 2019. Of the seven Oceanian teams, six compete across two divisions of three teams, while a rotating seventh goes on tour.
