Cinnamon Citadel Kandy, formerly known as The Citadel Kandy, is a four-star hotel located in Kandy, Sri Lanka. The hotel is located on the bank of the Mahaweli River. [2] The hotel's main deck is decorated with Dumbara weaving designs and an 18-foot handwoven wall hanging by Ena de Silva. [3]
The 1974 annual report of British Airways mentions that its investment in Mackinnon Mackenzie was transferred to Kandy Walk Inn which was building a hotel in Kandy. [4] The hotel was built in 1983 and was designed by the Sri Lankan architect, Channa Daswatte. The hotel was featured in the film Deveni Gamana and when John Keells Holdings took over the hotel it was used as a circuit bungalow. [5] The hotel company was listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange formerly under the symbol "KINN", however has been delisted later. [6] Today the hotel is a part of John Keells Hotels which trades as "JKH.N0000". [7] John Keells Holdings launched a new brand of hotels consisting of three- and four-star resorts of John Keells Hotels Group along with The Citadel Kandy in ITB Berlin in 2006. [8] The name of the brand is revealed to be "Chaaya Hotels & Resorts". [9] After refurbishment, the hotel was relaunched in September 2006 as the third hotel to be relaunched under the brand Chaaya. [10] The hotel got the present name after a rebranding in 2012. [5] After closing for three months due to the COVID-19 pandemic the John Keells resorts reopened a few resorts including the Cinnamon Citadel in July 2020. [11]
The hotel consists of 119 rooms and two suites and a conference hall which can accommodate 80 people. [3] The swimming pool and the main restaurant are located on the riverside. [12] The hotel also has a spa and a gym. [13]

John Keells Hotels PLC is a hotel holding company in Sri Lanka. John Keells built its first resort in 1973 in Habarana. John Keells' hotel management company operated under several names. In the 1970s, the company was known as Walkers Tours Hotels. Then in the 1980s, it was known as simply Hotel Management & Marketing Services, and finally, in the 1990s, the company became to known as John Keells Hotels. John Keells ventured into the Maldives in 1996 with the acquisition of Velidhu Resort Hotel. In 2004, the hotel chain underwent a major restructuring. All resorts were brought under John Keells Hotels Limited, and the company was listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange.
Cinnamon Life Integrated Resort is the first integrated resort in Sri Lanka and the largest private investment in the country. Sri Lankan-British architect, Cecil Balmond designed the resort while Hyundai Engineering & Construction is the main contractor. The construction of the resort began in 2014. All the buildings in the resort topped off in May 2019. Even though the resort was originally planned to be completed by 2018, the project got delayed several times due to various reasons. John Keells started handing over keys to the suites apartments in August 2021. With handing over of residential and commercial units, revenue recognition started at Cinnamon Life. The remainder of the project is scheduled to be launched in a phased manner, in the first half of 2023.

Aitken Spence Hotel Holdings PLC is a hotel chain holding company based in Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan conglomerate Aitken Spence is the parent company of Aitken Spence Hotel Holdings. The company operates hotels in Sri Lanka, Maldives, Oman and India. Aitken Spence ventured into the hospitality business by building two seaside resorts designed by Geoffrey Bawa. The company was founded in 1978 as Ahungalla Hotels Ltd and is the proprietor of the Hotel Triton. Ahungalla Hotels Ltd was listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange in 1980. In 1994, after acquiring Aitken Spence Hotels Ltd, the company gained control of the properties of the hotel chain.
