Cities in Motion is a business simulation game developed by Colossal Order and published by Paradox Interactive. [1]
The goal of the game is to implement and improve the public transport system in various cities. This can be achieved by building lines for buses, trams, metro trains, waterbuses, buses, and helicopters.
It was released for Microsoft Windows in 2011. Paradox Interactive released the Mac version of Cities in Motion on May 20, 2011. [2] A port of Cities in Motion to Linux was announced by Paradox Interactive in 2013, with it eventually arriving via Steam on January 9, 2014.
The main objective of the game is to create a profitable transport network that provides residents access to places of work, leisure, shopping centers and residential areas in various cities. The player acts as the head of a company providing public transportation, building new transit networks and completing from city residents or the mayor. 4 European cities are available in the base game: Amsterdam, Berlin, Helsinki and Vienna, but other cities have been released with DLCs and more can be added with addons and the map editor.
Public transport lines in the game are closed loops of stops along which transit vehicles move. There are five types of transport in the game: bus, tram, metro, water bus and helicopter. Depending on the type of transit, structures required for the operation of the route differ. A bus route needs a few stops installed along an already built street, trams need rails and stops along them. Metro needs large stations connected with metro tracks. Water bus needs two water bus stops on water, and a helicopter needs two helipads.
Management in the game involves regulating the salaries of workers and setting fares. Increasing fares increases revenue from routes, but may reduce the number of potential passengers, who are divided in the game by social cliques. At the same time, as employee salaries increase, costs increase and the condition of vehicles improve.
There are two game modes available for the game: campaign and sandbox. The campaign mode consists of scenarios depicting historical stages of public transit development in various cities throughout the 20th century. In each scenario the player needs to complete all tasks provided by the city mayor or citizens. The player is given a certain amount of money, and can take out loans from different banks with different interest rates and earn money from the transit system. Loan payments are made monthly until the entire amount is returned to the bank. At the same time, the number of available loans is limited, so if the budget is spent inefficiently the player might go bankrupt. Sandbox mode is a free game mode; when starting the mode, the player can select the city, the starting year from 1920 to 2020 and the starting amount of money. In the sandbox mode, the player is not limited to completing scenario tasks and can build the city's transport network at the player's own discretion.
One of the game's lead designers Karoliina Korppoo has mentioned that the focus in Cities in Motion was on the citizens. [3] Citizens divide into 7 social clique groups, each with their own public transportation preferences and needs:
Tutorial in this game is presented in a separate scenario with tasks containing basic instructions for controlling the camera, navigating the interface, operating the company and building routes.
Cities in Motion has a built-in map editor that allows players to create their own city maps and edit existing ones. The editor is equipped with various tools that allows landscaping, placing trees, buildings, roads, etc. With the help of mods and addons it is possible to increase the number of available object models and expand the functionality of the editor.
A total of 13 downloadable content packs were released for Cities in Motion, all including a total of 58 new transport models, 9 cities and 2 new metro train station types.

On May 19, 2011, Paradox Interactive announced Cities in Motion: Tokyo, the first expansion containing a new city with a campaign and new Monorail transport type.
A poll on the game's Facebook page made the city of Munich a free download for all users in addition to the expansion pack. During their Holiday Teaser, Paradox Interactive released a photo of the Statue of Liberty with the title Cities in Motion. U.S. Cities soon revealed in a press conference in January 2012. [17]

Overall, Cities in Motion received mostly favorable reviews from reviewers and players. The review aggregation website Metacritic displays the score of Cities in Motion at 72/100. [29] Reviews from players on the Steam platform are "mostly favorable". Among more than five hundred reviews left by users of the service, 75% are positive. [30]
Reviewers noted that the video game has quite good graphics and soundtrack, as well as interesting gameplay, which at the same time can become too repetitive. They also believe that despite the convenient interface, the video game lacks direct passenger-player communication to show why exactly passengers are dissatisfied with a particular route. The opinions of reviewers were divided in regards to the difficulty of the video game and its scenarios. According to some reviewers, the complexity is unduly overestimated, which leads to significant micromanagement, while for others it has become not an obstacle, but a kind of challenge. Some reviewers have noted that the game had very few playable cities in the base game.
"City maps are attractive but are lacking in atmosphere and are somewhat utilitarian, presumably to best show off the game's focus on roadways" noted Brett Todd in his review for GameSpot. In addition he has noted that the game completely lacks the day-night cycle, as well as any weather conditions. The clear and intuitive interface, as well as the complexity of game scenarios were in Todd's opinion the greatest achievements of Cities in Motion. At the same time, he emphasized the repetitiveness of the gameplay and the need for a more accurate description of passenger dissatisfaction, as well as some tips for the game: "For example, when people are mad along bus stops because of wait times, do you add more buses to the existing routes or lay down new routes?". [31]
On August 14, 2012, at the annual Gamescom video games trade fair in Cologne, Paradox Interactive announced the sequel, named Cities in Motion 2 . It was released six months later on April 2, 2013. [32]

King Arthur: The Role-Playing Wargame is a real-time tactics and role-playing video game developed by NeocoreGames and published by Paradox Interactive in North America, Ubisoft in Europe, and E-Frontier in Japan. It seeks to blend elements of the real-time tactics, role-playing, and grand strategy genres into one. A sequel titled King Arthur II: The Role-Playing Wargame was released online in Europe on September 20, 2011, and then worldwide in 2012.
Mount & Blade: Warband is the standalone expansion pack to the strategy action role-playing video game Mount & Blade. Announced in January 2009, the game was developed by the Turkish company TaleWorlds Entertainment and was published by Paradox Interactive on March 30, 2010. The game is available as a direct download from the TaleWorlds website, through the Steam digital distribution software, as a DRM-free version from GOG.com, or as a DVD with required online activation. The macOS and Linux versions were released on July 10, 2014, through Steam.

Crusader Kings II is a grand strategy game developed by Paradox Development Studio and published by Paradox Interactive. Set in the Middle Ages, the game was released on February 14, 2012, as a sequel to 2004's Crusader Kings. On October 18, 2019, the video game became free to play. A sequel, Crusader Kings III, was released on September 1, 2020. Crusader Kings II attracted a wider audience than Paradox's previous games, contributing to the growth of the company.
War of the Roses is an action hack and slash video game developed by Fatshark and released by Paradox Interactive. The game is set during the Wars of the Roses which took place in England during the 15th century. It was released on 2 October 2012. War of the Roses was well received for its extensive customisation enabling character configurations to be tailored to very specific tastes and for its original "control scheme to tackle a new kind of combat with the aim of creating a completely different experience". The game shut down on 28 February 2017.
NASCAR The Game: Inside Line is the second edition of the NASCAR The Game racing simulator series, and the sequel to NASCAR The Game: 2011. Developed by Eutechnyx and published in the United States by Activision, it was released for PlayStation 3, Wii and Xbox 360 on 6 November 2012. A PC version for Windows was released in July 2013 entitled NASCAR The Game: 2013. All the 23 Sprint Cup Series race tracks are featured in the game, with the addition of various Cup Series drivers, teams and cars. The game's cover features NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. his first cover since NASCAR Thunder 2003.
Prison Architect is a private prison construction and management simulation video game developed and published by Introversion Software. It was made available as a crowdfunded paid alpha pre-order on September 25, 2012 with updates that were scheduled every three to four weeks until 2023. With over 2,000,000 copies sold, Prison Architect made over US$10.7 million in pre-order sales for the alpha version. Prison Architect was an entrant in the 2012 Independent Games Festival. The game was available on Steam's Early Access program, and was officially released on October 6, 2015.
Europa Universalis IV is a 2013 grand strategy video game in the Europa Universalis series, developed by Paradox Development Studio and published by Paradox Interactive as a sequel to Europa Universalis III (2007). The game was released on 13 August 2013 for Windows, OS X, and Linux. It is a strategy game where players can control a nation leading up to and during the early modern period - from the Late Middle Ages following the Battle of Varna (1444), the final crusade, to the Napoleonic era with the timeline finishing on 2 January 1821 to coincide with the death of Napoleon on 5 May 1821. Players navigate their nations with conducting trade, administration, diplomacy, colonization, and warfare.
Cities in Motion 2 is a 2013 business simulation game that was developed by Colossal Order and published by Paradox Interactive and is the sequel to the popular mass transit simulation game Cities in Motion. As with its predecessor, the goal of the game is to create efficient public transport systems in different major cities of the world. In this edition, there are several new features that the developers introduced based on community feedback about the previous game, including day/night cycles, rush hours and the ability to create timetables. The additions also include dynamic cities where players' decisions have a notable impact on city growth, and the inclusion of cooperative and competitive multi-player. The developer of Cities in Motion 2, Colossal Order, also developed Cities: Skylines, which is also a city building game with a mass transit system.
A Hat in Time is a 2017 platform game developed by Danish game studio Gears for Breakfast and published by Humble Bundle. The game was developed using Unreal Engine 3 and funded through a Kickstarter campaign, which nearly doubled its fundraising goals within its first two days. The game was self-published for macOS and Windows in October 2017, and by Humble Bundle for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles two months later. A version for the Nintendo Switch was released in October 2019.

Cities: Skylines is a 2015 city-building game developed by Colossal Order and published by Paradox Interactive. The game is a single-player open-ended city-building simulation. Players engage in urban planning by controlling zoning, road placement, taxation, public services, and public transportation of an area. They also work to manage various elements of the city, including its budget, health, employment, traffic, and pollution levels. It is also possible to maintain a city in a sandbox mode, which provides more creative freedom for the player.
Stellaris is a 4X grand strategy video game developed by Paradox Development Studio and published by Paradox Interactive. The game is highly inspired by the works of Stanisław Lem and contains numerous references to his works.
Warhammer: Vermintide 2 is a first-person action video game developed and published by Fatshark. It is the sequel to 2015's Warhammer: End Times – Vermintide. Vermintide 2 was released for Windows on 8 March 2018. It was released for Xbox One on 11 July 2018, free for members of the Xbox Game Pass. It was released for the PlayStation 4 on 18 December 2018. Anno 1800 is a city-building real-time strategy video game, developed by Ubisoft Blue Byte and published by Ubisoft, and launched on April 16, 2019. It is the seventh game in the Anno series, and returns to the use of a historical setting, following the previous futuristic titles Anno 2070 and Anno 2205, taking place during the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century. Following the previous installment, the game returns to the series' traditional city-building and ocean combat mechanics, but introduces new aspects of gameplay, such as tourism, blueprinting, and the effects of industrialisation influences on island inhabitants.
Crusader Kings III is a grand strategy role-playing video game set in the Middle Ages, developed by Paradox Development Studio and published by Paradox Interactive as a sequel to Crusader Kings (2004) and Crusader Kings II (2012). The game was released on PC on 1 September 2020 and on the Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 on 29 March 2022 in most regions. The game received generally positive reviews on release, and has sold over 3 million copies as of September 2023.
Orcs Must Die! 3 is an action-tower defense video game developed and published by Robot Entertainment. It is the fourth installment in the Orcs Must Die! series, and the direct sequel to Orcs Must Die! 2. It was released as a timed exclusive on Stadia on July 14, 2020, and for Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S on July 23, 2021.
Gloomhaven is a turn-based strategy role-playing video game, developed by Flaming Fowl Studios and published by Asmodee Digital. It is an adaptation of the tabletop game by the same name. Following two years of early access, Gloomhaven was released for Windows on October 20, 2021 and macOS on November 25, 2021. The game was ported to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S in September 2023.
